Just installed this drive - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/sams...state-drive-mzvlv128hcgr-00000-hd-222-sa.html

I then did a CrystalDiskMark test and was shocked buy the results. As a comparison I also checked my SATA Samsung SSD

M.2 PCIe 3.0 SSD

SATA Samsung Evo SSD

WTF is going on?

I simply installed it on my Gigabyte X99M mobo (Bios F3) and booted up Windows 10 (which is up to date).

Should I have done somit in the bios first?
Checked the Samsung web site and could not see any specific drivers however Windows recognises it as a Samsung

So any thoughts?

I have the same drive but the 256 version in my laptop and ran this test last night:

Something somewhere doesn't look right, the 128 drive is slightly slower than the 256 but should achieve 2000mb/s read and 650mb/s write.

Could you have a look in device manager and see what on the driver tab please and let me know

Here you go...

Same as yours by the looks of it. I think its more likely chipset related, do you have the latest chipset driver?

Thanks for you help so far

Looking in Device Manager - System Devices, what should I be looking for as there are many entries

they are not wrong, you should have bought an SM not PM model, did not even know they did a PM variant.

RMA it under CCR and pay the difference for the SM.

Bugger!

I blame Sam at OC who suggested that would be the fastest based on the fact it was NVMe and the one you pointed to is AHCI. The 256 one is even faster at writing than the 128

I thought NVMe was better than AHCI?

Looks like I need to speak to Sam and see if he will exchange it

I am getting confused

You say I want the NvMe version of the 951 and not the AHCI however between them there is only a small difference is speed

NVMe = Read 2000MB/s, Write 650MB/s, 300k/83k IOPS
AHCI = Read 2000MB/s, Write 600MB/s, 140k/40k IOPS

What is interesting is moving to 256GB there is a big hike in the write speed

Just get the 950 Pro 256GB M.2 PCI-e 3.0 x 4 NVMe Solid State Drive. Best option £150 at overclockers on this week offers.

Don't need 256gb will just be a waste as its only for the OS

Am I correct in thinking the OS drive will be doing more reads than writes

For a OS drive it needs to be a good all-rounder. The 256 and the 512 are a bit more faster than 128 even if you do not need the extra capacity you would still be better of with the 256. If cost is the problem you would do just as well with a SSD like 850evo.
Real world benefits of M2 drives are small.
