**** The LG G5 Thread ****

Used to be exclusive to Samsung flagships, but since the iphone clone S6 I've lost interest. I particularly find the innovation between flagships minimal. The main two features that they've added over the S6 were pretty much on the S5 two generations ago (Water resistance, SD Card). The camera on the S6 was already class leading, so I can hardly see it being worlds apart in that department. I might be interested in the S8 or N6 if they give a damn enough to release the Note 6 to Europe.

I still value the option of a removable battery and this seems to be pretty much the only flagship with this feature. The skin also looks very light, which is still a weakness for Touchwiz in my opinion.

I'm not sure what people expect Samsung to do? It's fairly obvious the S7 wasn't going to be a drastic change in terms of design/appearance, it didn't need overhauling.

The S6 had a very premium build to it and this design only needed tweaking which is exactly what Samsung have done by curving the back, reducing the camera hump and packing a much bigger battery whilst only increasing the overall thickness by 1mm.

Also the "they've just added features that were present on the S5" is such an over simplification. The S5 was IP67 rated and required physical port covers for the MicroUSB slot, the S6 is IP68 and is sealed from the inside. A completely different approach and challenge engineering wise vs the S5.

When push comes to shove, the S7 can't be matched in these areas by anything that's been announced:
  • Screen - DisplayMate are raving about it
  • Camera - 100% dual pixel sensor coverage is impressive. There are APS-C sensors in £1,000 CSCs that don't even have this
  • MST - A big plus for Samsung

Plus you can get all that without having to concede in other areas as you're still getting fast charge, wireless fast charge, Qi and PMA support and the latest SoC.

Being different for difference sake doesn't make a company innovative, especially if there's little benefit. The camera module is just an additional battery with a shutter button and a scroll wheel that controls digital zoom. The Sony QX was a similar strategy in terms of bolting something onto your phone and that failed to sell any decent volume, despite it actually adding a better sensor and optical zoom to your device.

The DAC might actually offer an increase in audio quality, but it has limited appeal to the masses. A very small % of people in the grand scheme of things are storing their music locally in a lossless format, with a DAC and decent headphones. Majority of people are happy steaming songs via Spotify on their iPhone and listening through the default Apple earphones.

So in my opinion, these "magic friends" aren't even beneficial on their own merit, that's before taking into account that the base G5 has a smaller battery and worse screen than the base S7.

Nail. Coffin. RIP G5.

I was debating between G5 and S7 a few weeks ago but now both have been released only one winner. Just need to decide to go Edge or not..

I think the modular idea could be a good one if they bring out some decent modules, but neither of the two announced seem worth it, the camera one being especially pointless. Not that I can really think what modules I'd like.

Very much this for me

I do think the s7 is more of the same.

I'm certainly at the point where a 600 pound phone vs a 200 one is really only going to give me a different look

Functionally.. I personally wouldn't get any benefit

I don't know. With the two lenses, it makes it worth zooming in and out and I always find that a bit of a pain using pinch or the volume buttons. Then dedicated camera button is something many people like... then all that extra battery too.

I'd have loved it on my last holiday where I used the phone camera all day long.

the reaction to the lg g5 reminds me of the reaction to when samsung released the s5 with the waterproof flap and the band aid back. it seems a lot more negative to.

lg doesn't have the sales to recover and is already dying on it's arse.

they've more than dropped the ball with the g5, they've "htc"d lol

How have they? There have been several comments about this being terrible without any reason given?

Seems like an improvement over the G4 to me, what are people hating so much?

They might not sell many here but that's not to say it won't sell in other areas, such as Asia, where tastes are often very different (and obviously the Asian-based LG thought it was a good design), and LG are a heck of a lot bigger than HTC and hopefully have a design department.

It would hardly be a disaster for LG anyway, unlike HTC, as they have plenty of other business areas to soak up any poor mobile sales.

I don't think the G5 is a bad phone, the G4 has very good reviews and the G5 is an improvement on build materials and camera.

I just fail to see how the magic friends system is innovative. Different is probably the right word as innovation tends to mean it changes the direction of the market as a result. The S7 is a better device hardware wise in most areas, but it'll depend on price. If the G5 is priced competitively enough to make up for the inferior hardware it'll do alright.

Yeah good point. I guess I'm thinking about my own requirements, but I can see how it could appeal.

Surprised at the lack of over for the G5 here, it's a lot more interesting to me than the S7. I'm not blown away by either though, so will wait to see what Huawei a d HTC do.

It really isn't that interesting when you break it down.

I'd rather have a bigger battery, stereo speakers, OLED, better design.... before all this weak modular mumbo jumbo.

Wide angle lens is more interesting to me, nothing you mention is of interest. Nothing weak about the modular side at all, you either use it or not.

I get what you're saying about all the friends stuff but its purely optional, I think if you ignore that its still looking like a decent handset and an improvement on the G4, plus a removable battery that matters to some people, though not myself.

As for price, I know its not announced yet but I see Handtec have it listed for £540. Not sure if they are guessing or know something but think it will struggle at that price, though I guess over £500 was expected. It'll probably do well once it drops in price like the G4 did.
