I'm a bit confused. I thought pretty much all lights on a vehicle are for other people's benefit? With the amount of people I see driving with no headlights, even they are are apparently of no use to the actual driver, however every other road user's safety depends on them being on.

It isn't a scissor that way round, not for him anyway.
If the car was the other way round and it was the opposite door however...
** same goes to you-- less of the personal remarks please ** Most doors have a light (or at least a reflector on the edge so that it makes it easier for other drivers to see that they are open
Anyway, i'm glad you're all OK and i hope everything goes smooth for you with the claim and the person involved.

IIRC MissChief owns a MK1 Seat Leon, so the door cards are like this
How are those lights for anybody's benefit, other than for road users approaching your open door?
How did she take it, will she still let you see the kids?
Had this with the mrs on the school run.
Mrs was bent over on roadside (oo-er!) strapping in little one when *bang* our rear door slaps her on the ass and sends her sprawling across the back seat.
Turns out one of the other mums couldn't wait and didn't even bother slowing down and unfortunately the gap wasn't wide enough and she hit our car.
Nowhere near as much damage as yours, so i rang the husband of the woman who hit us and offered to get a quote - we just wanted the car repaired, to which he replied it was our fault and at least 50-50 as we opened the door roadside.
So, it went to insurance which found them completely at fault.
However, a few days after the incident the mrs was in some pain and after a trip to the docs ended up with several months physio which ended up with us claiming some compo as well as having the car repaired.

Girlfriends dad scraped the doors on his Jag across a bollard and the insurance wanted to write the car off, yours is far more damaged so I fear a write off unless you can find a garage that can do it reasonably priced.
Unless you can gather some cctv this I fear will be awkward as the driver might say you flung the door open as he passed, but it is quite a wide road so I hope this is taken into account.

Regardless of whether the driver says that, he or she is still at fault, they should give at least 3 foot distance where possible to parked traffic incase of situations like that.

Is it a one way street? If it isn't I don't think it would be possible to give 3 foot without driving in the other lane. The driver would say the door opened from the inside of the car thus there was no indication a door was about to be opened like there would be if you saw someone physically approach the car. Obviously I hope it all goes straight forward and I could very well be wrong!
Meanwhile, in the real world, this would cause gridlock on many roads as it would be impossible for 2 cars to pass whilst leaving a 6ft gap, and other roads would be rendered completely impassable.
Hence why i said where possible.
Actually, i am probably talking crap and going of advice given to me by an instructor years ago as i cannot find any rules regarding that

Little update, my insurance company are stating that it is not my fault, not sure what the other driver has said yet though, I do have a witness luckily who saw the whole thing so if they try and claim that I opened the door on them then at least I have his statement to fall back on, fingers crossed.

Glad you are okay and that your family is fine - that's the most important. Still heart wrenching seeing your car get damaged by an idiot.
How come you want them to write it off? Usually that's the opposite of what people want. Is your car being held together by tape?

Thanks mate, yep everybody ok.
I hate the idea that my car has being repaired and I was putting it up for sale anyway so it may save the hassle of selling it.

I do agree with you in theory - purely because the vast majority of people seem to turn into blithering idiots the moment they get behind the wheel - however practically speaking it's not possible the majority of the time

Exactly! The lights are clearly there so the door can be seen to be open. I know some cars have puddle lights that illuminate the area under the door and sill but this is clearly a 'my door is open' light for following traffic. Not sure why he felt the need to attack me but glad to see the Admiral Huddy wouldn't let it go.
