What have you done to your car today?

It isn't all things considered, and I don't.

It is, really... especially with NCB.

Prices have come down since I was driving at your age, thanks to the balance of male/female discrepancy.

When I was 20 with no NCB, it was nearly half that on a 2L Astra "sport" in the middle of Southampton.

When I was 23 with 1-2 years NCB and XKR/scoob - so high risk vehicles - it was about that price... and that was in a mid-risk area in a London commuter town.

Not trying to rub it in... it just seems excessive unless you're in a high-risk area... but I'm sure you've already gone through all comparison sites and done the ring around thing to play the brokers off each other.

Did your Astra "sport" have 190HP? Did you have an annual mileage of 20,000? Did you have a low voluntary excess? Did you have business mileage cover?

When you were 23 years old, were you 20 years old? How many miles a year did you drive? Were any of those miles business miles?

I'm not sure what sort of "point" you are trying to make? :p

Seems alright to me, I can't remember what I paid for my Mondeo now but it was about 1100 quid a year which isn't far off what Acme is paying for his Corolla.

As I said I was previously paying £81 a month, and it is only going to be £110 a month because I have to change my policy terms so I'm insured for an extra 10,000 business miles per year! :)

Isn't 10k business miles a year well into the realm of being provided with a car allowance or company car? That's a lot to expect you to put on a personal vehicle.

You made me think about this a little harder than I had been previously... It is actually only an additional 6500 miles per year once you subtract the miles I would ordinarily be travelling on those days for my commute.

However I am being paid 45p per mile in mileage allowance from when I leave my house, to when I get back to my house, which works out as about 10,000 miles a year which I can claim money for, which of course, is £4500. Taking fuel cost and such away from that I still end up with over £3500 extra per year.

I wouldn't get that if I used the company car... So really, I'm using my own car as a money making excercise... Which, interestingly, my company are OK about, because the people giving me this opportunity aren't the same people who manage the finances... :p

If it becomes a long term thing I will run two cars... Perhaps a 1.9TDI Polo and 350Z? :D ;)

(I just want an excuse to have a Polo 9N again... :()

It was £81 a month for 10K PA and no business miles.

I'd love to pay £81/month! :) I can't wait to get some years on my license and some NCB!

right now, 25 with a mazda 3 sport, 6 months on license I pay 225/month.

high risk area in london :o

Acme, I was paying £160 a month at your age. I did have a Astra VXR though. Makes me laugh at how much of an idiot I was with money when I was younger.

Also did 25k miles in a year in the Fiesta ST before the vxr which wasn't a problem back then. Wouldn't do it now though, getting too old at 27 :p

Wouldn't pay anything more than £400 for insurance on any car now.

I love when people say things along these lines lol, it's like "yeah no, I don't like the 2k quote I've got from you, I'll offer you £385 a year, take it or leave it"

sadly due to idiot drivers, insurance companies who are money hungry(obviously) young/new drivers will get bent over no matter what car they take :o

While you have a point grudas, I doubt that was the cheapest car for you for insurance.

I had plenty of quotes in the £1-2k mark for cars I would much rather have had but ended up picking the one that was (almost) cheapest on insurance (£800) and cheap to buy. I could have gone for a 1L car of a similar age but that would have saved me less than £50 which didn't seem worth it for the suffering of a 1L **** box :D I do have a good postcode rating here but even for my home postcode which was a very bad rating I got quite a few quotes around the £1,200 mark.

You just wanted a nicer car!

oh I'm not saying I couldn't have had a cheaper/slower car and paid less :) I totally could've done that but the fact is that I bought my car simply because I love cars and wanted something I'd enjoy driving around in and to be very honest a very cheap 1.0 would just be sitting outside my house rusting because I'd hate driving it.

but even the cheapest, slowest 1.0's etc were nearly 2k to insure, I believe the cheapest quote I got was for a brand new VW Beetle 1.2, which was 1.2k

the usual 1.0 yaris, polo's etc were all hoovering around 1.8-2k.

:o

Don't really have to worry anymore. I had a quote at £370 for a E92 M3. :p

You say that, but I love cars and I enjoyed driving my 54HP Polo just as much as I enjoy driving my T-Sport. (Possibly more!) :D

Theres something about thrashing a slow car...

I miss it... Everything had a sense of achievement...

Lift off oversteer in this car makes me go "whoops", lift off oversteer in the Polo made me go "woooooahhhh! I got the back out!!"
Hitting 100 in this car makes me thing "Hmm, maybe I should back off a bit", hitting 100 in the Polo required some real effort and planning, and felt good. :p

I could also have more fun with day to day driving. "Chasing" people on B roads when they were just driving normally for example... Redline quickshifting while staying under the speed limit... Re-styling it with a tree... Re-building it on my driveway... Getting out-accelerated by a lorry and bouncing up and down in my seat in celebration when I pulled ahead... Thrashing it after people at the Super Southern meet... Ahh good times... :)
