Ok, so group sets. I've currently got tiagra with OEM Shimano brakes and chainset on my better bike, and Claris with Shimano long drop brakes on my rubbish bike. I'm planning on upgrading the better bike to 105 and then shifting the Tiagra to the winter bike and selling the Claris bits. I'm also planning on getting a chainset power meter for my better bike, like the powertap c1, but I can only use 5 bolt cranks with that, so getting the 5800 crankset is pointless. I figure I can save a bit of cash by just buying all the 105 bits bar the chainset, and a tiagra 4600 chainset for the cack bike. Then I can use the OEM crankset with the rest of the 105 kit until I get the power meter and then put the cranks from the OEM unit on the power meter, as that's a 5 bolt set. Then I'll hang on to the OEM chainrings in case I need to swap off the power meter for any reason.

Anyone see any major issues with that plan?

Sounds like a pretty solid plan. Don't know how much you can get for Claris parts. Shimano did just upgrade one of the lower end ones, can't remember if it was Claris or Sora, so the faster you can sell the older parts, the better I would say.

About CO2 inflator heads: Which one do people use?

Yeah, I'm not expecting more than £50 or so for the lot. Sora has been upgraded to 9 speed lately, Claris is the new 2300 and is miles better than 2300 ever was, but still only 8 speed. It does the job, but not well enough for me to keep it over Tiagra!

I thought SKS mudguards were supposed to be easy to fit??? Spent forever trying to cut the things and just given up trying to fit the stays to the frame as they keep pinging out :(

Hahahahahaha, who told you they were easy to fit? They're a pig to fit. The point is they're worth battling with because once they're on they're staying on for good.

Pffft. What are you on about? My set flew on only taking half a day to fit :p ;) They survived an off that saw the bike bounce through a full 360 though so they are worth the effort.

I'd normally always say that it isn't worth going up one groupset unless the parts are worn out, but since you have a trickle-down plan....

Blimey todays ride was much harder than planned, wanted to get a couple of hours in before getting back for mothers day, mate text me saying he was up for a ride, so went out and met him, only problem being I left about 15 minutes later than normal, cue a hard first 10 miles, think avg power was up about 230w or so!

Then about 20 miles in, I looked at my Garmin and thought bloody hell how is my avg speed so low, being 15 mph and Normalised power of 220w then realising I'd already climbed 1500ft. Chilled a bit after that but felt pretty exhausted by the time I got back.

Hard work riding in the cold in the winter with all those layers.

Does your bike fit 11 speed axles? Generally doesn't cause a problem but it's worth looking into. Gets a bit more complicated when you consider the refreshes, Tiagra 4700 seems to be very similar feel and quality to 105, just 10 speed and a little heavier. Even Sora R3000 which was just announced looks nice...

Yeah, the wheelset on that bike has 11 speed miche hubs. When I bought the wheels I had to chase the wheel builder for the spacer to use my 10 speed cassette because he didn't send it the first time round!

Yeah, the refreshes are weird. Tiagra 4700 is still ten speed but isn't compatible with 4600 because of different cable pull - what's that about! I've not read up on the new Sora yet.

popped out for a slow cycle with a mate to see how my knee was doing. Ended up with some harder efforts then a mini race up broomfield in richmond hitting 185 bpm :o knee held up fine though.

was the first ride on the new wheels and tyres and they felt really good. Putting on the tyres for the first time though was another story, hutchinson sector 28s so UST. Ended up with a load of goop on the carpet stinking the room out. I need a new track pump.

185? Pfft, hit 200 several times going round on Friday! :p
