Family Saloon Upgrade - rear leg room

We are about to have a 2nd child, currently we have a Ford Focus, but thinking we need something bigger, for two reasons:

  • More stuff to carry around, so bigger boot.
  • More legroom. Currently 1 car seat goes behind passenger seat, but front seat won't go all the way back when seat is in. With two kids one will be behind me as the driver - so I'm looking at something with more rear legroom to allow me to get the drivers seat far enough back. I'm 6' 2'' and on the Focus have the seat right back for a comfortable driving position
  • Plus the Focus is 7 years old and an upgrade would be nice.

I'm considering the following (Diesel models, either hatchback/saloon or Estate):
  • Mondeo
  • A4
  • Passat
  • Mazda 6
  • 3 Series

The Mazda is probably my preferred based on value for money vs spec.

Am I likely to get much more rear room with these? The Car Seats are Joie Stages - they rear face when up to about 3 years of age and then forward face after that. I know I could change car seats, but these are versatile and remain rear facing up to 18kg (so are safer then other forward facing seats).

Additionally on the above anything else people would avoid, I'm looking to spend around 15k so am looking at 1-4 years old.

I'm going to have a look in on this thread as well. I'm almost in the same situation and considering all the same cars. New Superb looks really nice (I'd be after the estate though I think). Really like the look for the Mazda 6 as well. As much as I like the BMW and Audi's, I can't justify the extra spend on them to myself!

I still can't get my head around it being a "Skoda" though. I've still got the mindset of them being bangers. I know that they clearly are not now.

If he is bothered about legroom it is a class up he needs to be really looking at.

The Superb however for the price will knock anything out of the comparison when you look for similar aged cars with the level of spec.

It's more rear child seat room than pure leg room be honest - obviously they're linked though (child seats tend to need space a body level if you see what I mean).

Superb definitely sounds like a good shout but the looks just don't appeal to move, definitely looks a bit stretched in saloon form and hearse like in estate form. They do look good value and well made so maybe I have to accept I can't have everything!

Yeah I'm the same. Put it next to the Mazda 6 (especially latest uplift) - and looks wise (inside and out) the Skoda comes out worse. Practicality though... I guess I know which will win!

Not in comparison to something that's physically longer to begin with it doesn't.

What an utterly bizzare comment
The MkVIII Civic does have very good leg and head room. Car length doesn't really come into it. More wheelbase and how the interior is arranged.
