Tony Blair says Britain's unemployed are WRONG to complain migrants are taking their jobs and says t

Its being considered,

It was an example of qualification inflation, Same example can be made of nurses if you wish.

But its not just a degree in basket weaving thats required. They are explicit in the degree you take but its simply jobs that have never required such levels. The point being that the attainable jobs are being restricted further and further up the chain and leads to wage depression in those lower end jobs that do exist, meaning even if you work, you will still take social help.

and just to go back to Burnsies point

many less than there are people though, so you end up inflating the jobless no matter how qualified or eager.

These are good points that do have impacts on people, but whilst it is painful now, the consequences of qualification inflation can be very positive and far reaching. Having well educated citizens higher up in the value chain is very valuable to the economy.

So the south east? there's an unhealthy imbalance already which effects the south east as much as anyone, why make it worse?

This is a fair point that is a wider issue. We need to fix the root issue rather than trying to not exacerbate the symptoms though.

Don't take everything I say as 100% the case for everyone, for goodness sake.

This type of discussion always goes one way. The people too bone idle and lazy to do anything other than minimum wage jobs while expecting hand out will just shout and complain how they are being hard done by until those of us who aren't bone idle an lazy give up trying to discuss anything with them and go off and get on with our jobs.

Let me ask you this then, why are all car washes that I have ever seen, run by non-British people?

Yet, go into an Apple Store say, or an EE shop and see how many of the people aren't British. It's a very small number in my experience.

Why do you suppose this is?

Blair betrayed the working classes and now he's trying to blame them for the drop in income they experienced. Not everyone is cut out to be a doctor, nurse, software engineer etc - you need to provide opportunities for people to become painter and decorators, labourers etc. Telling these people they should have got a better job is insulting and ridiculous.

That sums it up perfectly for me.

Blair is full of it :(

That was the problem when you could go to University and study something no-one would ever carry forward into a career.

Eh? A degree is only as valuable as it rare. If every 18 year old gained a degree tomorrow they would be worthless as a qualification.

All that happens is current jobs demand higher qualifications than they need (because they can), you don't suddenly create millions of new high paying degree level jobs.

Because British people think they are above washing cars for a living.

there is plenty of free education out there, in fact there is more than ever in the form of online courses

added to that you can easily get student loans for open university study so no up front costs there either

where are the free qualifications?

The Level 3 Access to HE Diploma tuition fee has been set for 2013-14 at £1511 for students aged 19-23 (although some may be entitled to a fee waiver due to personal circumstances e.g. previous qualifications, if not working and receiving benefits).

Students who have to pay may spread this over 6 instalments or claim 10% discount if payment is made in full at enrolment before the start of the course.

For students aged 24 and over at the start of the course the fee will be £3022 but you can apply for the 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to cover this.

its used to be free and cheaper, now people on benefits have to pay.

I did an apprenticeship and the highest qualification I got was some NVQ Level 2 thing that was part of my apprenticeship. Didn't do A levels, no degree and I run the network operations for an ISP - work paid for my professional qualifications. I know I will hit a pay ceiling unless I get more professional qualifications, but there's nothing stopping me from earning 6 figures if I obtain the highest professional qualification in my field - no degree needed, just hard work.

No they just rent and happy to share bedrooms and accept a lower standard of living.

They seem happy, maybe us British people have something to learn from that.

Not sure where 400k comes from. The 1 bedroom flat with garden next to me in Zone 4 of London is £230k.

All I meant by that was that anyone could get a degree in anything they wanted before, and now they are becoming more valuable again.

It's roughly equivalent to the paper MCSE we had an issue with in IT. MCSE was seen as the mainstream thing to have on your CV, but it was only of value if you had any experience to back it up. If it was just an exam pass it was basically worthless.

Just like most of the degrees were between 2-10 years ago.

min wage £6.70 uk house price 400k 30 times your wage, never buy a home.

I live in a very comfortable 3 bed semi at the moment, and am looking to upgrade. This house cost me £135k or so. It's unlikely I'll ever spend over £300k on a house, never mind £400k.
