It was an example of qualification inflation, Same example can be made of nurses if you wish.
But its not just a degree in basket weaving thats required. They are explicit in the degree you take but its simply jobs that have never required such levels. The point being that the attainable jobs are being restricted further and further up the chain and leads to wage depression in those lower end jobs that do exist, meaning even if you work, you will still take social help.
and just to go back to Burnsies point
many less than there are people though, so you end up inflating the jobless no matter how qualified or eager.
These are good points that do have impacts on people, but whilst it is painful now, the consequences of qualification inflation can be very positive and far reaching. Having well educated citizens higher up in the value chain is very valuable to the economy.
So the south east? there's an unhealthy imbalance already which effects the south east as much as anyone, why make it worse?
This is a fair point that is a wider issue. We need to fix the root issue rather than trying to not exacerbate the symptoms though.
