How does this Audi A3 look?

I agree £2900 is a good start point to haggle on cash in hand. Honda Civic are nice cars . all looked ok inside apart from the boot area the side panals looks like it got a few deep scuff's, apart from that all good to go :D

Good stuff! How much of a bargaining tool is cash in hand really? My cash is still in the bank at this point and would prefer a bank transfer when I am there or go to the nearest bank there. There may be a notice period for that sum of cash, I am not entirely sure.

Is the Civic local? Because if it's far I would ring first and see how negotiable the price is! As u will be lucky if he knocks hear £400 off and takes 3k for that.

That civic looks decent and tbh even at asking not a bad price. Glad you came to your senses, I'd take that before your potential A3 anytime. A friend just bought a poverty spec A3 1.6 petrol and compared to the 1.8 I-VTEC civic hire car I had a while ago it drives worse and is not as quick

The gentleman's way of negotiating is to actually look at the car first, then make an offer based on what you see. Trying to hack chunks of cash out of it before you see it is a bit rude IMO.

The last time I bought a car without agreeing a price before ever seeing it was 2004...

I ask is the price negotiable that's a more polite way over the phone :p I knocked a good few hundred off my Focus ST over the phone as i was driving nearly 120 miles to York and wasn't driving all that way only to find he wouldn't budge a penny.

Okay, but do you then go around the car and point out every last stone chip or blemish and demand yet more off the selling price?

Maybe I'm too kind to sellers when I go buying cars...

Not at all with my Focus being a 1 owner from new private sale and talking in length with the guy I agreed a price with him over the phone paid him £50 deposit through PayPal to take his ad off and cover his fee's so he knew I was 100% coming then paid the rest in cash. It was exactly as he described and I expected a 9yr old car to have a few scratches on it.

Either way works tbh - if someone is serious enough to actually call me and you know, make human contact rather than text or email I'll happily talk money. At the same time I don't mind waiting until they've seen the car

£3k is fine for that and not remotely cheeky IMO. If he has had loads of calls over it then the £3k probably won't drive it away, but you can always consider your own position when you're there if another hundred or so secures a good car

Just a quick update, I bought the car! All checked out well and got it for 3100 in the end! Immaculate inside, outside has few things expected from its age, and it goes really well. Lovely comfortable, quiet drive! bliss! - compared to my 16 year old clio! MPG is more than I expected too.

What was that the Civic? Did it have full stamped service history or with the guy saying in the ad he services it himself or something did it not have any

It had stamped history first 3 years, then the guy (2nd owner)I got it from went to honda to get all the servicing parts including oil. He had a dug out in his garage too which I assumed used to work on his car. They seemed a very nice genuine retired couple with a lovely tidy home - even made me lunch while I was there sorting out insurance! This all gave me confidence that he was telling the truth about him having carried out all the servicing himself. I am doing an oil and filter change very soon myself, as it was about 12 months ago (6k miles) that he last done it.

No kidding I would have liked full stamped service history from honda, but when cars get to this age, a lot of people prefer to start doing it themselves as they intend to keep it for a really long time! In this case, they were getting a new car which was higher up as the ole guy was getting bad back issues. They had it for nearly 7 years. It had tyres done in 2014 on the front, and a new aircon condenser in oct 2015 which cost £347! New rear brake pads in Jul 2014.

Slowly I will be changing all fluids like gearbox, brake, coolant etc. I will probably end up letting honda doing the brake fluid as that is more fiddly/messy.

Oh, and sorry to all thinking this was still about the Audi, its way off track now!

Sounds like a good example for a good price :) I like buying private so i can meet the owner and see what they are like etc and go off my gut feeling.
Get some pics up!
