Bought a phone off eBay 6 months ago and now been blocked.

Please don't divulge personal information about people, regardless of the circumstances. It doesn't look good on the forum or the shop

Sometimes the shop must sacrifice itself for the greater good... mainly the forum entertainment...

Throws popcorn away...

IM DONE SCREW THIS :p (OP probably wouldn't have delivered anyway)

another clueless post.

they can see who has been using the phone for the past 6 months. do you not think insurance companies are aware of all these scams?

how does the original owner explain to the insurance company that another sim has been using the phone for 6 months before they reported it stolen?

their story wouldn't add up. yo mate sum1 nicked ma phone. when was this? 6 months ago. why are you reporting it now?

You say it was stolen this morning. They don't care what sim is it, for all they know you changed it.

all OP has to do is contact the insurance company or his own phone company prove he has been using it for 6 months (which is easily do-able) and it should be the first thing they check.

for instance they know where it's being used too. oh btw did you move house 6 months ago to OP's location? well why have you been using cell towers in that area for the past 6 months? so the phone was stolen this morning yet has been getting used 200 miles away for 6 months?

they will ask where it's been stolen as well as a police report.

etc, etc.

insurance companies are well aware of insurance fraud. do you really think it's in their best interest to keep handing out phones worth £200+ for £50?

if they aren't then i'll hand them my cv as cases like this are open and shut IMO, I could save them billions.

once he has said evidence it's a quick phone call to police, paypal, ebay, etc. the phone's imei will have been tagged in a police report somewhere. so the police can solve this after he phones his mobile provider.

i just hope he's not with giffgaff or the like as then he is screwed.

Still doesn't mean that's what will happen though. The seller in this case is probably just a chancer.

I'm also still trying to figure out why you were so condescending this morning. GD before coffee perhaps? :D

it's basic common sense IMO and I'm unwell which is why I'm cranky. It should be blatantly obvious to anyone.

Hello police my phone was stolen this morning. Where were you , where was the phone, etc. IMEI, it's all recorded. you need a police report to report a phone lost or stolen to an insurance company. i'm sure police officers who post here can confirm all of this.

He then proves that not to be the case to the police and there you have it.

All he needs to do is contact his provider I'm amazed nobody can join the dots. It's not that hard is it? He knows where the seller lives so if it's his phone it will have been reported in that area as stolen. he can prove it's not been in that area since he bought it.

so the police will then pay the seller a visit or whoever reported the phone he will then crumble when the evidence is presented.

Sorry to hear you're unwell, hope you get better soon :)

I must say that I think it's perfectly plausible that the seller get away with this. If it was a claimant who did this on a regular basis then perhaps they'd follow up but as a one off they'd probably just fork out the cash to shut everyone up and get back to fleecing the rest of us.

Cheers.

I think police would take fraudulent reports very seriously.

As they spend most of their time these days doing such reports instead of work they should be doing.

Did you pay by visa?
If not in future for high value stuff from ebay pay on visa cc. Well actually good idea for any thing expensive.
You have a 120day window to do a chargeback, this however generally starts from the date you notice an issue.
Wont save you al, the time but it's a good extra layer of protection.

this i think is standard for all cards right?

Just an update before ocuk shut the thread down, spoke to police today on 101 and also spoke to www.actionfraud.police.uk and have made two reports, one for theft and one for fraud. The police rang back later and asked for imei number so I hope they are contacting EE for information. Hopefully im getting somewhere with this messing.

no ones shutting the thread down, just asking for personal information not to be posted on the forums, that's it :)

why have you made a report for theft?

fraud one i understand which is what i was suggesting

Update:

Well what a surprise let down by the police and action fraud! I can see why people do this as they just get away with it so easily. I have the scums address, ebay listing all the information on the phone and still "no enough information" utter joke.

the police do seem to be pretty useless for things like this, surprised you didn't get someone saying 'it's a civil matter'

if someone had swiped your phone from a table in a pub they'd no doubt look at the CCTV etc.. but e-bay/online fraud for minor items like this they don't seem to be interested
