Golf GTI DSG

These new sealed auto gearboxes are nothing but trouble. Of course they're going to heat up and the oil is going to burn? Why not make them serviceable? I'm sure people would prefer to spend more to replace the oil every year than wear the box out completely.

Ridiculous.

As said, the boxes are serviceable with fluid changes scheduled every 40k aren't they?

My old A3 3.2 box had this, was fine with over 100k on the clock, forget what it had on it when I sold it.

Any other 'words of wisdom'?

Excuse me then, I know the Renault edc is similar technology and they're sealed boxes.

I'm loving dsg at the moment but now and then miss a manual.

While the later versions of the dsg boxes are more reliable then the old ones, it is still something I would want a warranty on to cover me incase something went **** up.

So basically would not recommend running one without a warranty unless your happy to take the risk and stump up the cash if it breaks.

From what i read when looking into these ages ago, they are largely reliable but when they do go wrong they are extremely expensive to fix.

I completely agree, I've specced DSG in the past 4 cars I've had because of this. However buying 2nd hand I wanted to question the OPs reasoning since a manual would be a safer bet. Since he can only drive a auto the point is moot anyway.

:D

I am a massive fan of the DSG box, my first experience was my own brand new Mk5 GTI, and have loved them ever since.

I put 400+ bhp and 520 Nm through my 2008 DSG and it gets pushed to the limit on track regularly. Basically a standard DSG box but with custom software.

Regular fluid changes and it's fine, although it does get rebuilt more often than when used on road going cars. Awesome to use when on full chat.

I have a MK7 GTI DSG - amazing boxes and very rapid. However, I'm not sure I'd like to own it out of Warranty due to past DSG issues

I have a dsg box in my mk6 gtd and i absolutely love it i would find it very hard to go back to a manual car. i love the car but unfortunately i have to sell it as i need a 5 door car with having a child on the way and i think i will get myself a 5 door mk6 gti with dsg

Meh... everyone says that but it's nonsense.

No issue getting two kids into the back of my 3 door Golf. The trick is in how far the seats fold forward.

Never give up what you cherish when it comes to having kids. Few years down the line, you'll regret it. (As I found out) Work them into your life the best you can and everyone will be happier.

sounds like sound advice to me.

I went to a VW garage at the weekend. They had a nice 2012 GTD DSG in red with leather seats for £15k. No GTIs on display but I was told the cheapest was £17.5k for a 2012, with 2 years warranty and 18k miles.

Is there some issue with GTDs re that emissions scandal?

82K miles on my MK5 R32 DSG and still going strong with no issues. Mechatronic units were the thing I kept reading about before I purchased and was the main reason I kept my extended warranty up, however as it stands (touch wood!) it's been faultless.

DSG oil and filter change done every 40K miles and I did a recalibration with a VCDS a couple of years ago now for that placebo effect of it feeling smoother and quicker :)
