New "fun" car time - looking for suggestions

Not a massive Evo fan, but if I could have one it would be a 9. Then do look good... :)

Though the 7, 8 and 9 all look much of a muchness to me.

Its a nice car but do they have the stock lights and stock suspension?

BC coilovers what is wrong with some people fitting Chinese crappy coilovers, bloody aweful on a road car, fine track only but cheap Chinese coilovers which BC are are not good at all, so ask for the stock suspension and re-fit stock lights.

I suspect they changed the turbo as well as 470BHP will destroy the stock turbo so its going to be running a larger unit, no doubt a red, good for power, but not so great for drive ability, more lag and spools later.

If I were you I'd try to find a nice stock example or one which has not had all the parts that make the X great ripped out of it. :(

the engine is ok because that was built by Indigo GT and is still under warranty, the Turbo is standard ........ as for the shockers, the standard Evo Xs felt brilliant on the Red FQ300 so i dont know why he changed those, unless these feel ok of course...... the white Evo 5 has Ohlins and sticks to the road like glue.

my biggest concern is it's Auto, this kills the fun by at least 80%.

IMHO EVO 9 sexier than 10 :p
.

But 6.5 is just sexier :p
.

no doubt the 5 looks great too, it looks awesome, it looks far better in real life than in the photos, but the sound is something else, it's not like a normal Evo, it sounds deeper, it's a real head turner that's for sure.

the engine was actually rebuilt in nov 2015, so it's far newer than i thought, the new owner has done 1000 miles.
i remember saying i was scared to drive it home on my Evo thread, what an idiot i was, because it's safe as anything........ it's the Honda Jazz that's dangerous at speed, it's a death trap, it rolls around like a Jelly esp on a Motorway !!!

You seem to have viewed and driven a lot of them and STILL not bought one. What has stopped you making a purchase? Why are you looking at cars you don't want (auto's) but then saying "it might do". Just buy one goddammit :D

Any number of factors can cause a dsg gearbox to fail. Same way a manual can fail.

Are you saying they are as reliable as a manual, and cost the same to fix? Because I dont think that's true.

Trick is buy a car which still has a warranty or you can extend the warranty for peace of mind. Then if it breaks, you're not paying the bill.

So the car becomes next-to-useless once the warranty is no longer valid, or has expired? Score one for the long term durability. What happens when the car is 6 years old with 100k miles?

This makes for interesting reading.

I imagine over time the reliability will improve significantly. :) But in the mean time there's a lot of investment going into traditional torque converters.

The owner is pulling your leg buddy, an X on stock turbo cannot make 470BHP, that is new bigger turbo and uprated conrods to handle that level of power. The stock engine and stock turbo absolute maximum is 440BHP and at such power they have had the stock engine and turbo let go. I know I used to own one of these cars and did a lot of research when I owned mine and the most power I could make reliable was around 420 ish whilst maintaining stock power delivery.

I think the owner judging by his blacked out lights, BC coilovers and impossible 470BHP is either dreaming and never actually dyno the car on a accurate dyno so is just making up bigger numbers.

Judging by the modifications the owners has done it on a tight budget and I'd be really steering clear of that car and looking for a stock one or one with at least more tasteful modifications.

The EVO 5 your looking at seems to have being modified to much better taste with a lot more money thrown at it, Ohlins coilovers, now were talking those are the real deal that ride superb on both road and track, not just a one trick suspension but that is why they cost 2-3x more than a set of BC's.

My worry over the EVO 5 is it is clearly highly strung, hence engine rebuild and its only done 1000 miles so its not a particular well proven and reliable car unfortunately.

P.S. The SST gearbox cannot handle more than 360lb/ft without modification, this is why it was only available on FQ-300/330 models, 360 and above it was not an option. ;)

No thats not what I'm saying. What I am saying is DSG has come along way since it was first implemented (like back in 2004/2005 with the Golf GTI mk5).

Personally I would not like to run one without a warranty. But plenty of people do, they will just have to stump up the cost if something major goes wrong.

Cool. So we agree that reliability leaves something to be desired. :)

The biggest issue for me with DSG, PDK, DCT etc. is when they break they tend to leave you stranded. On a manual at least you can feel or hear warning of a clutch letting go (slipping) or gearbox issue (crunching) and limp it to a garage.

Typically a DSG/PDK will just throw a paddy and not select gears, though they might of improved now to have limp modes to at least not strand you when they break.

This is a thread to give Scoobydoo some ideas, not a continuation of Mal's (failed) daydream thread.

One of the reasons i'm laboured to sell my Evo is to have people like him turn up to view it!

Wow at all this Evo talk :D

Let's be honest here. If I buy German, or anything over £15k, it must have a warranty of sorts. Hence Cayman etc. would need to be approved used cars with real warranties.

In regards to the DSG/whatever twin clutch gearboxes, I have no doubt they're great. But my wanting a manual is not only for driving pleasure, but also for the reliability. I don't wish to buy a car that has any chance of killing its very expensive gearbox.

I don't have issue with expected failures/running costs, but adding a fancy gearbox in it for me will always leave me with a niggle in the back of the mind that it might break, and it won't be cheap.

This is coming from the man who managed to strip his 4th gear synchro on the "strong" 6 speed STi box and broken a couple of 5 speeds too. But those repair costs were nothing compared to what a twin clutch box would be.

Plus, it's going to be a car for fun. Manual = more fun, right? So.. only manual.

PS have booked in a test drive of a 340bhp new STi. Been a while since I've had a go in a modified 2.5.

Still haven't managed to arrange the 370Z.

Called an Audi dealership by the Porsche garage about a TT-RS, all he could offer a go of was the latest TT-S, but has said he'll keep an eye out for last model's TT-RS. Apparently they don't see them very often.

Hoping to get a couple more test drives booked in next week when I'm off, so I'll have something to report on soon.

If it's going to have warranty, then why worry about the cost of fixing a gearbox?

I like the 370Z a lot but a TTRS will blow it out of the way.

TTRS has a short shift gearbox if thats your thing.
