RX8 R3 - opinions?

They are horrid to drive in traffic. They become grumpy, hot, hard shift gears and do about 8mpg.
Don't get me wrong, I loved mine and all the "it drinks oil and floods" talk is not really something as a knowledgeable owner you would be concerned about but don't for a minute think its good in traffic!

The RX-8 is deeply frustrating. It's like finding a stunning woman who really likes you, has all the right qualities, likes the things you like and is proper wife material except that she drinks more than George Best and only has a few months to live.

:D But she'll give you a good time whilst it lasts.

I paid £280 for my new S2000 hood. Bit of a pain to drive to Swansea, but well worth it! Expensive suspension is the killer - I'm about to hand over a wedge of cash to centre mavity.

I considered buying an RX8 R3, twice in fact! In the end, I thought "I could have a V8 with more power and lower fuel/oil costs", so I bought an E39 M5. Obviously the money saved on fuel, oil and tax goes on keeping a 16 year old car in good condition, but I get one of the all-time greats, with an engine configuration that's going the way of the dodo, and getting on for twice the power.

So in the end, I just couldn't.

That is a great car.

The rx8 has V8 fuel consumption. It has its own sound track which is awesome and the handling is like no other. You need to spend serious money to get something so focused and pleasurable to drive as the rx8. Consumption and VED are major downsides. If you don't do huge miles then the economy isn't an issue.

That is all true. It weighs a lot less than the M5 too, I enjoyed my test drive in it. It just feels like you've been short changed for 228bhp. There are petrol NA cars that produce that whilst also returning 30mpg average.

That is the downside of a rotary. They seem to have patented a new rotary turbo system recently so the RX-9 should be quite different.

I had an rx8 until someone wrote it off for me whilst I was asleep !! :(

I loved it, enjoyed the ride and the features, I loved driving It but I wouldn't recommend to anyone to buy one at 10k.

Before you buy, get a compression test on the engine. look for signs of rust on rear bootle and rear doors, be aware of people who have just changed oil packs before sale, generally a way of saying it has a **** engine and this is a cover up for hot start issues.

Insurance is cheap, I paid no more than 300 quid in my 4 years of owing one (27 to 31).

You will spend a lot of time refuelling, and you will need to top up a litre of oil depending ING on driving style every 800-1200 miles.

and with regards to flooding -

The engine idles around 2.5/3k when first turned on.. when revs drop to 1k after a minute you are OK to turn off.. just avoid it when possible!

Good advice. As well as changing the coil packs the earlier models had a weaker starter motor so changing to the newer one may also mask minor hot start issues. Glad to hear insurance is cheap. I haven't really looked into it.

Unfortunately I missed the Silverstone Japfest. I saw a lot of photos from the day. The RX8s looked great and the videos of the day show how great this car is around the track.

I picked one of these up in Edinburgh 2 weeks ago and drove it down to london with a friend (car wss for him)

It had 30k miles and in amazing condition. Cost -£6k so it's madness to spend 10k on one.

It's really nice for 6k.
