BMW noise help!

Hi,

I recently bought a BMW 320d E90 2010 efficient dynamics from Arnold Clark. It has done under 27,000 mileage and has had full service history 2 from BMW and one recently in February from Arnold Clark themselves.

The issue i'am having is, when the car is started up from cold and i put it in 1st gear and release the clutch slowly with out any revs it seems to be making a rattling type noise coming from the central gearbox area. You can hear it through out all the gears and when you accelerate you can still hear that rattling noise but it tends to get quite in higher gears and higher revs. it also seems to lessen in noise as the car has been warmed up.

there is not a performance degrade or a slipping clutch issue as i thought it might be the clutch going out as it pulls normally and there is not any service lights indicating a fault. the noise is very annoying and as far as i can tell it has not gotten worse but not better either.

I know clutch chatter is normal but this does not seem normal as again it comes from the gearbox area rather than the engine area. I have given back the car with the raised issue mentioned here and they have heard the the noise when the mechanic came in the car with me and i replicated the noise. it is still under their 60 day warranty and i took out a further 1 year warranty with them(glad i did)

its been with them since Friday and they cant seem to find where exactly the noise is coming from even though it is making the noise still.

I was hoping if any of you guys might have an idea? it seems like a tricky one!

also they have given me a VW UP as a courtesy car and it is in RED!!

Could be flywheel. Mine had something similar.

did you ever get it fixed and was it the flywheel? Also just got a call from them today and they are saying they are still unable to trace the noise and it might have to go to BMW for further investigation.......

is that a good thing or bad thing?

Got it fixed courtesy of bmw. Brand new clutch and flywheel. Mine went at about 35k miles so not too far off yours.

Does it make the noise when idling in neutral or just when you're in gear? I'd say it's likely to be the dual mass flywheel at fault. 27k does seem like low mileage for the DMF to need changing out though but if it does turn out to be that and you get it done under warranty then that's a result as I paid £800 for a new clutch and DMF on my E90 320d a few months back - and from what I gather, that's a good price for it on these cars too.

Depends who is paying!

Just when in gear, it's very noticable in 1st gear, and then through out the other gears as well but it lessens if you will. It is under their 60 day warranty and i also have the 1 year warranty after that runs out, but i did inform them of this noise roughly with in 2 weeks of me buying this car.

At the time they could not replicate the noise but did say to keep and eye on it which i did. I phoned them again after 2-3 weeks of the initial checkup and told them same thing and insisted it get checked out as its not normal and the fact my friend has the same car/model and his does not make this noise.

I think also last time when the mechanic sat in the car and drove it himself with me present it did not make the noise, but this time i drove it and managed to replicate the noise in which the mechanic said it was definitely needing to get inspected this time.

Sorry if this is spam but who buys a brand new ED BMW 320d and proceeds to do 4.5k a year in it?

Hi, same question i asked before i bought it, but it was an old retired couple who had originally bought it new from BMW and they only used it for short journeys, they also lived in the same area as the BMW dealer (giffnock, Glasgow, that is also where the BMW showroom is), it's also the same area where i bought this car from VW Arnold Clark dealer which is a couple of houses down away from the BMW dealer and where the original owners lived. so the car was always in the same area and thats one of the reasons it was so low in mileage.

Also the services seem to check out normally otherwise there would be big difference in mileage in between each service which i did not find odd.

It'll have been a company are, the 320d ED was a poor private buyers car.

Thats what i thought initially but it wasn't, also arent company cars usually high in mileage?

so far the car has been great apart from this annoying rattling sound and really enjoying the quality of ride and performance.

Again thanks for the replies and if you guys can think of anymore things do let me know! :p

I hope they do send it to BMW and they fix it as a goodwill gesture, but either way i should be covered under the 60 day warranty.
