PlayStation 4 Pro in-bound

Had a look through the Eurogamer article but that seems to be saying no 4k blu ray? That's a missed opportunity if that's the case as it would be a day one upgrade for me if that was there otherwise I'll have to wait and see.

Eurogamer also reporting it now.

Interesting speculation that it may be using Polaris for the GPU.

It also has this gem though:

eurogamer.net said:
the 36 compute unit count cannot comfortably fit any of AMD's existing GPUs. It suggests that Sony and AMD have pushed the boat out, that they are using the upcoming Polaris technology.

Whilst I'll give them the fact there are no GPUs with a compute count that have a 256bit bus, the 290/290x/390/390x, all have either 40 or 44 compute units. Assume reducing the memory controller wouldn't be too much of an issue either looking at the R290 block diagram (i.e. just get each memory controller to talk to 1 memory chip instead of 2, or halve the memory controllers)

The real driver for this I suspect is PSVR. That developers will have an enhanced profile to target that can prolong the life of the PS4 without the crazy R&D costs of a complete new system is just a bonus.

A lot of AAA development involves using very high quality (poly/texture size) assets that are scaled down automatically as part of the content pipeline so having an additional higher quality option to target won't be a major problem for well organised developers.

It's so blatantly being done to prop up PSVR. The PS4 doesn't have the power to drive the kind of VR games they need to compete with Rift / Vive.

It's the next big emerging market, Sony want in at the ground floor hence why an updated PS4 is required.

Armageus maybe you can help me, but any ideas why Jaguar is mentioned again on these specs? I havent been interested in keeping up with AMDs APUs but I cant believe something as old as a speed-bumped Jaguar is still considered acceptable. Why isnt it Puma or more likely something unannounced considering Puma isnt exactly new...
Be interesting to see what Microsoft counter this with.
Windows 10 'steam' machines - pretty much expect thats their end game, allows them to fight Valve, Apple, Google and Sony with all their differing capabilities...

Not sure really, as wouldn't make any sense. Puma is as far as I can see 100% compatible with Jaguar, as it was more a re-design to reduce leakage and lower power usage. Whilst 2.1Ghz isn't much of stretch from the highest Jaguar and Puma parts (2.05Ghz Jaguar based Athlon exists, and a 2.0Ghz/2.4Ghz boost A8 APU exists) it still seems a bit odd.

Can't see it selling for $399 as per that other link either if the GPU specs are correct, as having just looked at an american reseller, a 390 is still currently ~$330 - Sony will not want to take that much of a loss on hardware, regardless of whether they are trying push VR/4K or anything else.

Something still doesn't add up.

It's not confirmed though so still a rumour really until Sony announce it officially. Claiming to have seen leaked documents is not really proof of it being real.

I hope they do give it a boost as I will order one.

Ahem....

Sony is now openly sharing this specification with developers and while Giant Bomb beat us to the punch, we have access to the same documentation. There is no doubt - this is real. This is the new, more powerful PlayStation 4.

;)

Price of a retail card isn't really a good guideline for the BOM cost for a mega-volume integrated part, it'll be way, way cheaper than that.

Sounds good, GPU increase is 2.3x as powerful but could be more if it's based on poloris.

I'll be selling my ps4 before e3 to get most value and stick with my 2nd hand Xbox that I got cheap till ps4k

Well I was thinking die size but I cant see how you can fit a near-doubled CU GPU and have to retain the same CPU to keep the APU a particular size for better yields. Obviously moving to 14nm kinda makes that type of reasoning a bit silly...

While I havent really read the Eurogamer article to understand the references to Polaris I cant help but consider the idea they are just using the same tech from the PS4 and just using 14nm to allow them to improve the CPU (just a speed bump)/GPU (more CUs only?) while not really actually moving onto newer GCN parts. I feel like Im massively oversimplifying something, but its a cheap way to do things with stuff like a UHD BD thrown in (which supposedly isnt cheap, though surely thats just a new laser?!?).

No probably not - but for representative costs - the 7870 that the current PS4 was broadly based on, was ~$239 dollars @ Fall 2012 with launch in Nov 2013.

If it's Polaris based (which I don't expect it will be), I would expect it to cost even more as Fab capacity will be at a premium with the release of the new GPUs.

If I was an original PS4 buyer who was taken in by the hype, I would be preeeetty ticked off right about now, seeing my couple-of-hundreds being made obsolete. Perhaps early adopters not so much, but still...

Looks like the iterative hardware update that is normal for the PC is bleeding over to PS4/XBox. I think the driver for viewing this as a "good business decision" is from the home-electronics/prosumer/mobile phone markets, where frequent upgrades are seen as much more common (and acceptable).

Why? Is your PS4 going to suddenly stop playing games or something?

Indeed, it's like some people don't want others to have nice things.

Surely it's not a case of that at all - more a case of I'd rather not have fragmentation of a platform, and have to pay again if I want to play games in 60fps (as developers will likely not bother to try and optimise games to run at 60fps on the original hardware).

If it was just a Neo plays games at 4k and original remains 1080p, then I wouldn't mind, but it isn't. Going forward it potentially will be two tiers with standard owners having to settle for 30fps.

Don't get me wrong - I will likely end up buying one at some point (with my current one moving to the Kid's bedroom), but don't agree with the principle of it.

I doubt that would be the case.

If past form is anything to go by then games will be developed to support the slower hardware with no appreciable advantage for the faster machine.

It's a similar scenario to a small portion of the users having the PS Camera or a Kinect i.e. not worth the extra effort to utilise it when they can hit the majority of users while ignoring it.
