The Queen's 90th Birthday

It must be a class thing, I rarely find those who dislike the monarchy and claim it is overly wealthy, self indulgent and hedonistic say the same about premier league footballers.

Yet the first thing these often working class rooted footballers do with their new found wealth is emulate the Royals with huge houses, exotic holidays and "gilded coaches" :)

Lol that's true, but at least they did something for that wealth/life style and wasn't lucky enough to be born into or marry into the royal family.

Exactly. They always focus on the literal money in, money out (which has never been proven either way) and turn a blind eye to all the other areas where the Royals do a great deal for us. Diplomatic/trade relations being just one of them. I'll wager they do a substantially larger amount for charity than 90% of the super rich. That is all even before considering they are part of our history/heritage and cost us individually like 60p a year. I can pretty much guarantee the government take a lot more of money from us for far worse things.

But hey, it's the cool thing to do to hate on the Royals isn't it?

this.

helped to raise £1.4bn for charity.... so not much then....

royalist haters get over yourselves. talking about modern world, someone ruling over us, divine right.. etc etc. all complete garbage.

the footballer got equally luckyt being born with enough talent to play football and earn a living from it.

at least the royals and especially the queen give back.

Its abit different though ? being born with talent and having to work to train etc that talent for a small chance to make it different to wining roll of being born into the royal family and life being sorted with little effort from the get go.

Nice be insulting to people who have a different view to yourself. Its the rule of the internet I guess the just shout down people who have a different view.

I'm out

Where is the insult?

You can consider it unfair but it doesn't exactly take advantage of anyone. You can say it takes advantage of taxpayers money but the tourism and industry they drive more than pay it back. All that extra business and cash flowing through our country because of them trickles through all parts of society.

i didn't insult anyone... rule of the internet: perceive an insult when none was given.

the tourism argument is largely ********, France is a Republic and has a bigger tourist industry than us - people still go visit their palaces etc.. without having royals living there

the 'President would cost more' argument is balls too - if we had a President who literally just replaces the Queen's symbolic role we could easily cut costs - just one person & immediate family to protect and provide an income for vs an entire family of working royals, kids, grand kids etc.. and wouldn't require more than say Buckingham Palace + one other residence. so immediately the rest of the residences owned by the Crown estate could be sold on long leases etc..

However I'm in favour of keeping them, they soft power they have internationally is probably worth it alone - no other country has diplomats quite like them. World leaders do want to meet them, the Queen is head of state of several countries and I think with the real risk of us leaving the EU it would be especially useful to maintain strong links with the commonwealth. I certainly don't fancy having some ex-Politician as head of state instead.

Plenty of us here have a massive privilege being born white, male and British. Is that wrong? Position only obtained by birth nothing else.

Being born in a western country is a huge priviledge indeed, gender and race are certainly factors too but much less so than SJW types would like to believe. The biggest source of privilege though, IMO, is simply money.

Happy Birthday

Its quite humbling to know that Britain has one of the most globally recognized monarchy which attracts massive interest.

The two are not comparable, you can be white, male and British and never have anything or get anywhere in life.

Even minor royals have wealth and privilege beyond most peoples reach without doing anything.

they have massive privilege by virtue of their position obtained by birth and noting else, its wrong.

So what?

I'm trying to find the motive for disliking the royals. They attract tons of tourism which boosts the economy, they raise national pride, they don't affect anyone directly, it just boggles my mind.

People are so keen to bitch and moan about the royals when it doesn't affect them at all, and they certainly do more good than bad to the UK.

It's like people have nothing better to do or something

I think the point being made was that being white, male and British by birth means that you're going to have wealth and privilege that's superior to 90% of the world's population, whether or not you get anywhere in life.

I have a colleague from South Africa who was over here last year and he was desperate to go to the Tower of London to see the crown jewels and Buckingham palace. He was asking me so many questions about our royals and our history. He was totally enthused by the whole thing and I felt a bit embarrassed I didn't know more.

It is only the British that don't like the pomp and circumstance it seems. Everyone else who isn't a miserable cynic sees what they represent for this nation.

Spot on. The Royals are arguably one of the biggest factors for tourism in the world. Not the UK, the world.
