AuctionBay Faulty Item - Newbie advice

Hi all,

Recently purchased an item off 'the bay' and it's turned up (what i can only assume as being) faulty - i've done the usual of testing it on multiple systems, OS's, different USB cables, software (DAW) and driver versions and it's not responding what so ever.

The item was listed as 'No returns accepted' with the description -
Code:
I haven't connected it for a while so i don't know if it works or not but has been always in storage so with the right driver it should.

The item was sent second class (2SP; which is second class small parcel iirc) wrapped inside a TKMaxx bag and packaged in a typical post office bubble envelope - it's a reasonable sized piece of hardware (weighs just over a kilo), so i did assume it'd be packaged a bit better.

This being my first ever issue with 'the bay' (as a seller and buyer) in the 10+ years of having an account, where do i stand on getting a refund considering they listed it as 'No returns accepted'?

Secondly, what's the procedure for getting a refund?
Obviously contact the seller first and see what they response is but in the case they're happy to refund do they just refund via PayPal (how i paid) and then i post the item back (more than happy to do this obviously)?
Otherwise, what's the best method in the event they say no - am i better to escalate it via 'the bay' or PayPal? And then is it just the case of waiting and seeing what they say?

Much appreciated for any advice :)

How much did you purchase it for? If it is a little then just learn and move on if not maybe worth opening a case because it was listed as used rather than for parts or not working.

You took a gamble and it didn't pay off.

Pretty clear it was a risk, and i think the seller covered himself.

No refund imo

Ypu don't use ebay much do you?

Seller hasn't covered himself at all. He sold it on ebay.

there is no such thing as sold as seen and no returns on ebay.

I think they've designed their buyer protection around Rainforest's 'no questions asked' refund, sort of, to compete. Which essentially turned them into an ordinary on-line marketplace. Hence it's not ideal for typical MM or GumTree type stuff now; not bad for consumers though. The OP should be able to get his cash back.

How much did you purchase it for?

Only £30 (average price for the item), which is far from life threatening but understandably i'm a little peeved.

What i find is strange is the fact it was poorly packaged and wasn't sent special/recorded/signed, which i find a little odd.

Obviously i'll contact them either way but was wondering on what happens next in either case?

Seller should have packed it better for post.

How do you know? You see the package the OP got or are you just talk his word for it ;)

Don't matter either way. Had he boxed in padding and shock proof titanium casing he is most likely going to lose out anyway. OP will contact seller, seller will say 'sorry if it ain't working but I did say I wasn't sure' OP will open a dispute and eBay will (almost) certainly side with buyer.

You'd escalate via the Bay's resolution centre.
First port of call or contact the seller first?

Seller should have packed it better for post.
As mentioned, the item was wrapped in a extra large TKMaxx bag and then stuffed inside a 'size 7' bubble envelope; was far from brilliant.

On the contrary, use eBay quite a lot; just never had an issue with anything bought or sold, hence this 'What to do' type thread.

If you've already swapped messages, and you're still unhappy, it's best to keep any further communication going over an official dispute. Plus, if he doesn't resolve it to your/bay's satisfaction, you'll receive your money back automatically after 30 days(IIRC); the sooner the ticker starts, the better for you.

My comment wasn't directed at you OP

i think the seller needed to have listed it as "for parts not working" in order to cover himself
describing it as "used" and saying it may or may not work isnt good enough

Cheers all, will contact them first and then see what happens!

This was how it was packaged -

'No returns accepted' Does that actually mean anything on ebay?

"No returns" generally means if it works fine but you decide you don't like it, you can't return it for a refund. It doesn't apply to faulty items.

OP - if it doesn't work, contact op and ask for a refund. If they refuse, raise a case and Ebay will rule in your favour. You'll have to return the item in both instances, seller will have to pay for postage.
