Wearing a bow tie to an interview.

it would look a bit odd these days and in a lot of situations it would look like you're taking the ****...

if you're a bit old and in academia then you could probably pull it off, ditto to if you're a surgeon or consultant of some medical speciality

lastly maybe you're in 'media' and some sort of hipster or just an eccentric and going to google or other tech firm where they've specifically said dress code doesn't matter for the interview

in general situations though you'll look a bit silly just as you would if you wore a bowler hat, jacket with tails and/or carried a cane

It's going to depend on your overall style. Can you really pull off a bow-tie? Have you worn them before? What was the feedback like? Can you trust that feedback? What did they really think? Did they think you were trying to be like Matt Smith? Did you think you were Matt Smith? Did you pull out your sonic screwdriver and wave it at the ladies? Did Dixons chuck you out of the shop for that? Probably did. Don't be naked in Dixons with a bow-tie on waving your ***** about.

It really does depend on the job and the environment.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a bow tie.. a little dated (in some circles) maybe but still, nothing wrong with it.

Just ignore those poking fun at you here, they seem to have novelty items and black silk ties for use with a DJ in mind!

My biggest issue is this... A bow tie, nowadays, sits better with sports jacket etc.. it doesn't really go with a business suit. So, unless you were thinking of wearing a sports jacket to an interview (and I hope to god you are not unless it is in high level academia land, but even then wouldn't be interview dress, just everyday wear dress!) then it really isn't going to work! You will end up looking too 'casual!'

It doesn't matter whether you will or won't wear a suit and tie for your job... wearing a business suit makes you look like you care, looks like you are professional and shows you know how to dress 'appropriately' for the occasion!

Wear a suit and normal tie (and nothing silly).. going the other way WILL get you noticed but for probably the wrong reasons.

I think people who wear a bow tie are people who are advertising that they think they are a little bit wacky and unconventional. However I just see them as silly. In the nicest possible way of course.

Maybe acceptable if you are going to be a butler, or a clown... and it spins.

If you have to ask if it is proper to wear a bow tie, this suggests you do not usually wear a bow tie. Which in turn suggests you are trying to be something you are not.

Wear a tie.

Personally, I think you should wear these.

Good luck, let us know how it goes :)

What brand are they?

I think a bow tie is a legit choice.

Any employer who rules you out for wearing one is probably not your ideal employer anyway and, as mentioned, such things help you to stand out.

This is ridiculous. The exact same words could apply to turning up in your underpants.

The thing about interviews is that you want to avoid any reason NOT to employ you. A bow tie is a risky proposition because the interviewer may have either good or bad preconceptions about people wearing then.

Generally it's safer to avoid anything eccentric.

Yes you should wear one.

Bow tie to an interview..... Cannot be serious lol.

I imagine the OP laughing to himself as he clicked the Post button.

I'd wear a bow tie if I wanted to make the interview more challenging for myself, for sure.

But back in the realms of reality where I want the job, no, I'd not wear one.
