High Court Ruling on School Holidays

Good news.

Hopefully this will change the way it is dealt with, as asking for time away is always rejected for us. yet another family in the same school with a child in the same class is allowed

Once my kids are at the age of real exams and important grades then i wouldn't consider it, but for Primary a few days is not something they will struggle to catch up with.

blimey have parents got whinier lately

first world problems include:

"I cant go on holiday outside of term time"
"They are ruining little Anthonys life by making him do a test"
"I demand that MY child goes to the best school in my catchment"

waaa waaa waaa

Well obviously "first world problems" I guess many third world countries lack schools, with their "third world problems"

SATs are ridiculous, most European countries do not even start school until 6 years old and have better education results.

There's bad teachers and disruptive little ***** but taking a kid on holiday is of course super serious business. :)

i think it would be better if schools staggered their holidays tbh so not everyone was off at the same time.

Absolutely. The Scots don't have this issue. They break up earlier, get the cheaper holidays and fly from newcastle because the flights are still considered out of peak time.

TBH the exam stuff is getting a bit stupid. Year 2 SATs? When i was in primary school it seemed like we learnt what autumn was for 4 years, as if it wouldn't come round unless we knew about it :D

So i guess its time to book a holiday they can afford or sort it out with the school prior to the holiday so they 'catchup' in advance.

There is nothing to catch up at the end of the year, the learning is all done well before. Last year I asked if I could have the lessons my son would miss being out the last few days and was told they would be watching films and playing games and plenty of art.

As for SAT's my son is currently in Yr2 and yesterday sat his first Maths paper. What a complete and utter shambles being led by a government with zero idea what they are doing. Moving the goal posts mid point and having school scramble to teach the new level. About all my son has done for the last 6 weeks is test SAT's papers. His homework has consisted of old SATs papers. These tests will be finished almost 2 months before the end of the school year. Missing 3 or 4 days at the end will have zero bearing on his educational goals.

As I said I do a day per week at least in my sons school and the pressue this has created on 6 year olds has been heart breaking. Last week I saw a 6 year old little girl sobbing on a desk because she was upset she couldn't get help when they were taking baby steps having them do 3 questions in exam conditions and then going over them. All I have seen this do is create fear for a testing system that might carry on through their education. My son said yesterday some children got upset and had to be taken for a walk round to calm them down.

Brian Cox linked to this article on his FB page and I have to say I agree with it and him about politician thinking he or she can teach.

Taking the kids away week after next

Price 1week later (in the half term) is another £3100 on top of the holiday (its actually more than the cost of the holiday).

One school permitted the holiday. The elders school did not but have told the school any fine will be challenged.

The attitude of some people here of: If you cannot afford to go then don't is clearly very limited and I would urge them not to reproduce as that kind of idiotic hair brained train of thought (that flies in the face of all reason, fairness and indeed evidence) is a problem that needs to be cut. Poor families can afford to go, just not during half terms where costs are crippling!

Lets not forget the government has ignored no less than 3 major petitions on this nit to mention some of the people involved in the people on 6 figure salaries

Edit: To add I would never be so irresponsible as to take the kids away in a year that is exam year eg Y10/Y11 and those parents do indeed deserve a fine, but there should imo be another tier of fine in the order of hundreds of pounds for parents who are so irresponsible to to book holidays during GCSE exams (at least 3 parents of kids I work with have done this) the sad thing is all will just be repaying the fine from tax payers money anyway.

We are going to Spain on the 25th which is costing about £1300 for 5 of us, to do the same in non term time is over 3k the only reason we are going this time is due to some inheritance my Mrs had from a relative who passed.

It's not something we do every year as we do not earn a crazy amount of money unlike some, but its a way to treat our selves and is nice for my kids to go somewhere different, I never went abroad as a kid, and didn't until i was 25 this will be my 4th time I'm now 35.

next year we will probably just do days out, but even that ads up, fuel to go places then the extortionate costs to get into attractions you can easily pay just as much, but also have crap weather.

Exams at their stage in life is just crazy, and is putting way to much pressure on kids of such a young age, The current high school kids who are grading better each year never had to do them at that age so why start now

Make the fine £500 & he'd have thought twice.

Nothing worse than booking a holiday in term time to find when you get there its full of kids n babies being a pest all the time your there.

We have to pay for a lot of things that Wales & Scotland don't so it's not weird at all!

Keep it on topic, christ some people on here are beyond daft some times. It was a genuine question.

Bigoted is, as bigoted does apparently.

Ironically you're blaming Wales/Scotland for England having a completely screwed council/parish council and parliamentary systems which England's residents keep voting for.

I'm not blaming Scotland & Wales at all? I'm just saying it's not particularly surprising that English residents have to pay when residents of the other Union countries don't as it's not an uncommon occurrence, particularly within the education sector.

But yes, that's a matter for another thread.

Keep voting for? Have we had votes to change that sort of thing I've missed?

It's also perfectly clear what he means.

The government says it will now look to change the law.

"We will look at the judgement in detail but are clear children's attendance is non-negotiable so we will now look to change the law," said a spokesman for the Department for Education.

Typical government - elected by the people, but don't do what the people demand.

Government seems to forget who the kids belong to in my opinion. Yes they should go to school to get a good education but holidays subject children to all manner of new experiences and memories. We need well rounded children not just ones that can pass exams -and lets be honest I wouldn't let my kids have 2 weeks out but seriously what does a child learn in 1 week of school that couldn't be caught up.
