Motion Sickness / Nausea - Thread

Certain Video Games do it for me (Specially those with a lot of head bob) or narrow fields of view.

I go off-shore sea fishing quite a bit and I've been in some very rough seas and never had a problem with motion sickness (Although people say it's the flat calm 'swells' that get you the worst - Been in these too without issues) but 5mins into certain games and I am actually nauseous to the point I have to look away from the screen and stare at the floor for a bit or I will vomit, if I persevere with the game any longer it will make me feel ill (Dizzy/Head-ache/Nausea) for a good few hours after, I also had the same problem using 3 screens in Racing games with the field of view, a single screen is fine but the FoV on the three just messes with my vision/head.

It's quite a common problem believe it or not and Games Devs really don't seem to care and I'm really keen to try Occulus/Vive VR stuff but I just know already I probably won't be able to use them :(.

Incredible how many people actually do suffer from this, and to those that don't wait until you actually do get motion sickness, it isn't very nice. Think of it as getting drunk, without the drink ;)

I have seen people taken away in ambulances before thats how bad it can be for some.

My own father came very close to it once when we got back from a fishing trip got back to the harbour and he just collapsed after being seasick while we were out, and he used to own his own boat and go fishing every weekend with no problem then one day it just got him.

I personally never ever had a problem with sea sickness until I gave up smoking :(

Although now it seems to be when I go diving I am more likely to get sick on smaller Rib type dive boats than I am the larger hard boats.

Bending over to get kitted up is the worst part especially if I get a good nose full of exhaust fumes at the same time.

Mine is very specific. Only when hot and tired and on a stinky old bus. Or, when watching something in 3D or playing Minecraft. Perfectly fine on boats, being thrown about in a car, etc...

I'm weird. :D

I get it when watching things in 3d. When on busses. Or like some others here when playing games with a crap fov and loads of head bob!
Fallout was a really bad one for doing it to me.

I used to be really bad when I was little but these days I'm fine unless I try reading too much while traveling.

Although I do get a bit queasy when in the passenger seat. I think it's to do with not being in control/not being able to predict the movement of the vehicle and counter as easily as when driving.

I get horribly car sick on any journey over about half an hour unless I'm driving. I was told it's because the passenger moves in the opposite direction to the driver. When a car turns right, the driver's shoulders turn right with the wheel and the head follows. The passenger leans left, because science. Motorcycle passengers don't have the same issue because you have to lean with the bike (or fall off).

You get sick because your brain panics - Orionaut explained it perfectly.

Nausia is controlled by the brain, not the guts.

Motion sickness is basically a "Safe mode" for the body. In much the same way as an engine ECU generates fault codes if some of the inputs do not match up (A common one is manifold pressure and airflow in the case of a faulty airflow meter) and puts the vehicle into "Safe Mode" to prevent further damage.

If the sensory inputs from the Eyes and ears do not match up. Your brain generates a "Fault Code" in much the same way.

Say, You are on a ship, your eyes are telling you that you are in a room, your ears are telling you that you are moving all over the place (Balance).

Or

You are playing a action video game, your ears are telling you that you are sitting in a room, your eyes are telling you that you are moving all over the place.

Because they do not correlate, Your "Body control Module" doesn't know which inputs to believe, the BCM "Software" then puts you into "Safety Mode" by making you feel ill so that you sit down to reduce the likelihood of harming yourself. It also makes you throw up in case you have eaten something poisonous.

You can counter it by leaning the same way as the driver (although that gets tedious after a while) or by sitting on something slippy - like a plastic bag - when the car turns right, you will slide left, so will lean right.

Or, just drive everywhere :D. I drive, sleep or refuse to go on any car journey longer than half an hour.

The only time I ever remember feeling even remotely ill, was when I played the original DOOM on Steam. The speed of that game is just too much.

That's exactly what I was going to say. I often find in FPS shooters that (when they have the option) turning off the weapon sway in them massively reduces my motion sickness. The huge swing from left to right in the original DOOM games was a one-way trip to barf valley for me.

More recently however, Mirror's Edge is another game I can only play in short bursts, which is a shame because it's really good fun. And I'm going nowhere near a VR headset. No way.

Don't personally as a general thing but the odd game (usually with nasty mouse input acceleration or lag, etc.) can make me feel nauseous.

My sister used to use those bands for car journeys and worked for her - she'd throw up once every 20-30 minutes without - with would make several hours (you can't really fake that heh).

Half Life 2, hovercraft.

Oh I'd forgotten about buses - normally I'm fine on a bus but if there is very little air/feels close and I'm tired it can get me sometimes then.

Don't suffer from it - fortunately! I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've felt nauseous, and I've done some pretty nasty things that should!

Must be really irritating :(

i get it if i miss my turn and go around a roundabout twice , also on sea boats ,ok on coaches , cant do any rotating theme park things or swings .
ok on planes but havnt been on one for a quarter of a century or so .

I get terrible motion sickness, if I experience it then I'm pretty much out the game for the rest of the day.

Had it terribly when I was younger, it then went away when I was a teenager. Then, when I was around 21, I came down with a shockingly bad ear infection that floored me for a few days. Ever since then, the motion sickness is back to stay with a vengeance.

I even have to be fly about where I sit in meetings; if I'm sat in a position that means i have to turn my head constantly BOOM...unbearable nausea and feeling **** for a few hours afterwards.

Those old playground merry go rounds used to do the trick, weeeeee *spin* puke :D

I get slight motion sickness. I'll always try not to sit in the back seat of a car. Listening to music in earphones seems to help.

I went through about 2 years of constant nausea. I don't know why, I tried cutting lots of things out of my diet, dairy, wheat etc and nothing seemed to help. My friends Mum is a hypnotherapist and gave me a free session. I don't really believe in hypnotherapy but it seemed to clear up after that. It may have been a coincidence.

The only time I get random bouts of nausea is sometimes if I drink alcohol (okay, maybe this isn't so random but I'm talking 1-2 pints) or if I'm really exhausted. Every time I move my head I feel sick. That's rare though. It was actually a really depressing couple of years, I'm glad it passed. :)

Suffer terribly from it. I take betahistine most of the time to reduce the risk.

I can't be a passenger for longer than 20 minutes, which is why I do most of the driving.

If I look at a book or my phone as a passenger in a car, bus or train, I'll probably vomit within 5 minutes lol.

The rougher the ride, the less chance there is that I will suffer from it.

Rift DK2 put me in bed for 2 days from nausea.
