Went last weekend, loved it.
As mentioned already, Rijksmuseum and tbe Body Works exhibition are well worth the money. Boat trips are a nice way to spend an hour - €10 per adult for those. We also went to the world press photo exhibition in Dam Square, that was also €10 to get in and very interesting.
I hate the whole smoking thing and was surprised at how few places you could actually visit to do that. They stand out a mile, usually called 'Smokey 420 cafe' or the like.
We only used the trams on our final full day as you don't really 'see' the city unless walking around. 1hr tram tickets are €2.90 and you can travel as far as you like, 24hr tickets are €8.50 and they run very frequently. If you're going anywhere near Centraal Station I would recommend getting a tram to Dam and getting off there, the main station is heeeeaving.
Keep your wits about you - cyclists get very angry if you don't move within 0.03 of a second of them blinging their ******* bells.
Red light is quite a sight but very seedy. Wouldn't recommend going there at night especially as you get closer to the Asian part of the area. If you must know, it's €50 a pop (overheard some fat american asking
)
Must have some Vlaamse Frites - €3 to €3.50 for a cone, usually an outlet every 100 yards or so. Eating out isn't especially cheap but some places are worth it. Highly recommend trying some Shoarma - basically a dutch kebab but delicious.
Also did Anne Frank Huis and booked in advance, queueing time was 4.5 hrs on Saturday. Not my thing but really needs to be done. Enough to see inside and videos describing the diary and events.
The Dutch are extremely welcoming and friendly. Will definitely be visiting again.
