gpu for q6600 @ 3.6ghz

New? Second hand? Budget? What resolution is your monitor? What games do you play? Do you do any other work? What refresh rate do you need?

I recently upgraded from a Q6600 GTX 660 8GB system to i7-6700k GTX 660 32GB (I plan on upgrading to a 1070 once available). It was abundantly clear it wasn't my GTX 660 which was holding me back, but the Q6600.

Even though I'm still using the GTX 660 (for now) I'm getting a massive boost in FPS across the board in all games.

I don't think adding a more powerful GPU alone will give much of a boost to your system. You need to do a more system-wide upgrade.

This.
A 560TI is about the highest GPU I'd recommend to be using with an overclocked Q6600.

Get a 380X and you can play DX12 games at least.

Ofc if you find a cheap 290/290X second hand, and you have the PSU grab it. It will serve you for a very long time and it will not be cripped by the drivers like the above proposed NV cards.
That are not supported any more or in the case of the 970, after the end of summer.

Not supported any more??? Hummm maybe time for me to upgrade my 770. Still works a treat.

I think buying a second hand Q9550/X5470(or something like that) for a few quid will get you better performance than a new gpu.

I wouldn't think so. I definitely agree that the Q6600 is getting long in the tooth but a graphics upgrade is still probably worthwhile.

For the amount of money being discussed I'd go for a hybrid of what you've suggested and others though - second hand 290x, second hand 2500k+mobo. It will be a substantial upgrade for the cash.

Unless Kosmiche gives some detail as to what resolution he plays at, what frame rate and what kind of games then he will just get lots of vague, ambiguous advice that may or may not be pointing him in the right direction.
