GTX 1070 performance

Asked how they knew how the 680 was a mid range card? Oh because it was built on the GK104 part and everybody knows that Nvidia base their mid range cards on the GXXX4 part!! And now those same people are claiming that the 980 and 1080 are high end cards and are happy to pay to high end prices for those cards. Conveniently forgetting that these cards are built on GXXX4 parts

I just find the whole thing a little surreal.

What's even more bizarre is how intelligent people like yourself become upset by people labelling things on the internet.

The only thing that matters is that from tomorrow the 1080 will be the most powerful card available to consumers, until it get's beaten. Labels don't matter.

One big problem with what you just said. NVidia have a naming scheme and the 980, 970, 1070 and 1080 are very much in the high end family grouping of that naming scheme.

NVidia naming scheme is the below grouping. Number range (Last 2 digits)
00-45 entry level, <$100
50-65 mid range $100–300
70-95 high end. >$300

In the 70-95 high end the GTX 980 is listed as an example.
So the 970/1070 and 980/1080 belong in the high end family grouping.

Yeah, I guess and I understand that. I would have classed the mid range between $200 and $400. I just feel that you are getting less product for the price because people are paying high end prices for mid range parts.

Yes, they had the 580 and 570, the 480 and 470 for example? Would you agree that they were high end? And say the 460 GTX, That would be mid range right?

Lets compare chips to cards.

GF100 - 480, 470
GF110 - 580, 570
GF104 - 460
GF114 - 560

See the trend? The high end chips make the high end cards. Mid range chips for the mid range cards. The high end chips end in 0, the mid range end in 4.

Now lets look at what has happened in the last few years, Nvidia just did a simple name change.

GK104 - 680,670
GM200 - Titan-x, 980ti
GM204 - 980, 970
GP104 - 1080, 1070

So can you see what has happened? If we take the current naming scheme from Nvidia and apply it to the 5 series Fermi cards, then this is what happens

The 580 becomes the Titan-F (haha Fermi titan)
The 570 becomes the 580ti
The 560Ti becomes the 580
The 560 becomes the 570.
 
Excellent! My two 580's are still high end..... :D

I really don't get the debate re what's high, mid or low range.

Be it a BMW or graphics card, an e32 or e38 750 V12 is still top of the range relevant to when it was current, just as my two 580's are still top of their range when they were current.

A 1070 isn't high end, the 1080 and above will be so, just because a 1070 more or less matches a Titan it does not put it on par with one, one his top end old gen the other low end next gen.

Hardly rocket science.


I'll do with the 10series as I did with my 480 and subsequent 580's, buy when they've been succeeded and pay a sane price.
 
Well, they could release the next Titan first, see what amd have to compete with and then release a ti variant.

To be honest I'm expecting this release to be in line with kepler gtx6xx. Release Titan in the next few months, then ti version a fair while later. Hopefully I'm wrong
 
Of course they'll be a 1080Ti. Just keep an eye on what AMD are doing as you can bet Nvidia will be and then announcing something around the time AMD start pushing VEGA. That could be as early as October if rumours are to be believed, so Nvidia will want to have a response tucked up their sleeve ready to go. 1080Ti will be well under development already, no doubt about it.

The "new" standard "non GT" Ford would be a replacement for the existing "non GT" Ford.

Just because it was faster than the outgoing high end (Ford GT) does not mean the new line of standard "non GT" Ford would become the "top end" as this is a new series and therefore a "new" top end Ford GT would be released to replace the current existing model

People still Banging on about High End/Low end while the rest of sit bored

1070 hopefully is nice & cheap so AMD have to react and price theirs accordingly

It's pretty ridiculous lol. Majority of us don't care what label you guys think you're entitled to appoint to the card so give it a rest :o
