CII proposes husbands be allowed to ‘lightly beat’ defying wives

This has gotten off track a bit from the main topic which is that a government body that has influence over legislation in Pakistan is against the criminalisation of spousal abuse of women and is actively trying to prevent it in the name of religious beliefs.

At what point do we stop recognising the sanctity of someone's beliefs in favour of the greater good? What point does that apply to other countries' policies?

No I'm Sorry but its just wrong. He just needs to know that if he turns up he's going to get the biggest kicking he's ever had... Then he wouldn't.

Yes how dare he decide against ruining someone else's wedding day by assaulting another guest instead of trying to win internet man points by just handling every problem in life by punching it.

What, like this?

Some of us have seen domestic abuse up close and honestly, can't see comments like that as acceptable. For all that people probably don't want to see the above, maybe it brings home what the jokes are actually about or highlights that in Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia or Pakistan, someone can not only do the above, but do so legally and be open about it.

But I think the best way to bring reality of this home to some people is to show how it can apply to them, too:
.

That is a horrible injury, but why do i keep expecting a Mick Jagger ballad to start anytime now.

I'll get me coat.

Maybe Johnny Depp should go and live there. Sounds right up his street.

Edit: beaten :( ( just like Amber)

Maybe this is true or not, I actually like Depp, he has never really struck me as an ass, not in the past 15 years or so anyway and some of the movies he has been in are great and he does other stuff to help others, but since he has been in a relationship with Amber there has been a few strange things happen and i don't can't recall similar things happening in his previous relationships.

I know he isn't a saint also.

But if he is a woman beater surely some of this would have come out in the past, so why only now and in this relationship with Amber Heard, maybe he has lost the plot for some reason, he just doesn't strike me as a woman beater, maybe everything he portrays on TV\Media is just an act :p

Anyway if he has done it, then see yer Jack.

I agree with this, I don't know him but I can't see him putting his reputation and career on the line by hitting his wife when it would be far easier for him to just walk out of the door, hop on a plane and pick up 5 super models for the evening. He has nothing to gain. Where as she obviously has a lot to gain by just making the whole thing up.

Drugs

"She said the actor was high on drugs and drunk when the incident occurred, and that he had pulled her hair, screamed at her, grabbed her face and hit her."

Maybe then, I'll wait to hear the story in full before making my mind up either way

It's Pakistan, what do you expect? You're talking about the country where female rape victims get stoned to death because, in the ****ed up minds of those backward savages, rape isn't rape, it's adultery.

This is a country with nuclear weapons.....

SO what?
Do you think wife beating doesn't happen in North Korea, India, China, the US, France or Britain?
Wife beating through legal means is the least of Pakistan's issues.
make it illegal and they'll beta them none the less, bizarrely this policy might actually be them 'forward thinking' trying to somehow regulate the beating of wives, tone it down a notch.

Disturbingly, this is them at their best!

So, it is un-Islamic to NOT beat your women, ha ha ha, Islam, the people who believe in it and the middle east are a joke, some people on here will come up with their strange excuses for it though.

What about the poor men who have multiple wives? They must spend all day having to go to the trouble of beating them all, poor men, scum.

Must be the wests fault :)

I think your a joke for blanket stereotyping billions of people in a single paragraph.

In reality it's like any other country depends on the people in the marriage. last year some distant relative was murdered in Pakistan, crime is still unsolved though some suspect his shotgun wielding wife.

They could ban it and enforce the highest punishment if caught beating women,

It isn't hard, basically apply the same laws as they are suggesting but ban the hitting and enforce the punishment fully.

The suggestion that they are putting forward is just a token offer to the human rights brigade.

We all know none of what has been suggested will be enforced anyway, the beatings are done because Allah and his religion have said so, it hasn't changed in ~1200 years, it's hardly going to change now or in the next 50 years is it, laws are beneath those two things over there.

Name me a country over there that is primarily Islamic that has laws to protect women from being beaten and treated as 2nd class and are followed through to prosecution?

that works better when you're talking about ISIS etc.. not an official govt body in a country with a population of 180 million

it isn't just Pakistan either, this is legal in other Islamic countries - Saudi for example, there are even Saudi TV clips of clerics advising on how and when to beat your wife under Islam:

The Saudi also advocated light beatings and not to the face...

Johnny Depp would (allegedly) still potentially be in trouble

Why would they bother to introduce a law that they don't agree with?
They want to beat their women.
It is what they do.
Now they are enshrining it in their legislation, for just how much beating she should receive.
