Say if you had a 5820k, could you get the new top of the range chip to replace without upgrading the mobo?

Silly priced for a desktop. Becomes quickly unmanageable from a cooling point and can't overclock for toffee.

On the workstation side it's cheaper than a lot of Xeons options but it's not really a stand out CPU in the Xeon world. For a very similar price you can have a 28 thread 3.6Ghz chip with the options of adding a second CPU.

It's an oddball chip that offers very little/nothing in either world.

I think the only question here is, if someone was in the market for a 5820k are they better off going and buying a 6800K instead.

Correct however you WILL need to update your bios before removing the 5820k

I think you might need a X99 board with really high end power delivery. I think once you start increasing frequency you could easily be looking at 3-400 watts.

Awesome, just checked on the Asus page and my motherboard has a new bios out.

That price though, I would go for the 5860k before this at the moment

Considering the 6800k looking to be around £60 more on launch for next to no improvement it's a hard sell over the 5820k

Yeah, I was going to get a 6800K today but got a 5820K instead after looking at the gaming benchmarks which showed practically no difference. Couldn't justify spending the extra money for that.

So £2K for a 6950X+X99+DDR4 excluding a decent GPU.

Or £1k for 5960X+X99+DDR4!

I think I would buy a 5960 system its not like anything really needs 16 threads let alone 20! I knew Intel would find a way to sting the consumer though as it re-uses the same 2011V3 socket they cannot sell yet another motherboard variant so they price gouged the CPU :eek:

Not quite 2k for the 6950x setup unless you go to town with the Mb and ram, cpu's on pre order for just under £1400...

5960X can easily be had for around £780 + DDR4 + X99 cheaper motherboard=£1K

decent motherboard is around £200-£250 mate. 350-400 would be enthusiastic and above £400 is flagship.

If they are going Broadwell-E for the 6950X does that mean we will get a Skylake equivalent in the future?

Also noted that it only supports up to DD4-2400! lol

Long time lurker, first post

I am in the process of building a new system, and had the 5960x in mind but thought I would wait to see B-E prices/performance. I am now undecided between the 5960x and the 6900k, I must admit I am new to all of this as this will be my first build, and after looking at many reviews and benchmarks they seem neck-and-neck with very little difference in results.

Should I go for the 5960x or get the new 6900k?

At the moment it seems the 5960x would overclock better (?) so maybe go with that?

New? It is £850+ new on most places, where did you see it at £780?

Depends on the Mobo. I noticed the Asus X99 Deluxe has a new Bios update that says support for the latest i7-X Processors.

So your comparing apples to oranges! Cheap 5960x setup vs expensive 6950x setup! Compare like to like mb's and memory and it doesn't cost £1000 extra for the deca core..... It's a big jump but not quite that bad.... Hyperbole does not make a good (serious) argument...
