*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

Elite dangerous indeed. Just out on a run with my trade Python (grade A, but setup to carry stuff, not get into combat).
Interdicted by an Elite status Fer-de-lance.
Decided that survival was the best plan, so RAN for it.
Re-interdicted 4 times before finally losing him. Phew!

Well I have ditched my Python and I am back in a vulture. Been camped at a Nav beacon with security and made 400K in half an hour or so.(there seems more wanted vessels) I was attacked by 2 of a wing and was with modded weapons, however they were dead before I turned around.

Nearly all contacts were initiated by me and those that I was behind when I started my attack were finished off without shot being fired. (old AI tactics) These were master and dangerous.

I saw only one deadly, a FAS, however that was chewed up and spat out by Fed security before I got to it.

Will do some missions next.....

Thinking of doing something similar, but in my Clipper. Might seem an odd choice, but it's fast, turns pretty well, is fairly cheap (just in case it gets lost) and has sufficient cargo capacity to carry a LOT of limpets, which I can then use to speed up collection of debris from destroyed ships.

One question, for the scanning of wakes for the Engineers, do you need a wake shift scanner, or is a normal scanner OK?

so my main ship for general running around, combat and missions is the clipper its a good general purpose ship and u can run away quickly if need be.

You will need a wake scanner. I was hanging outside a station last night scanning wakes..

So was just doing standard hauling from random stations to random stations in my Annie.

Got interdicted by a FAS, i submitted with intention to run away, as soon as he finished scanning me, 2 rockets took my shields down and then 3 plasma bullets took me down to 20%, I managed to escape with 11% hull left.

I'm hoping this gets looked into, no human can have reaction times to remotely counter this type of AI or bug - whatever its called.

also, quick question, im seeing people posting trade missions paying 3-6mil etc, so far my highest ive seen payout is 200k lol, is there anywhere in particular for these? :)

That is a bug with weapon fire that takes down shields I a second or so. It will be fixed in the next release this week or next. It is to do with a network issue and AI multipliers when using weapons. Very odd explanation but from the horses mouth. If you can record it EDDevs would appreciate a bug report...

I did a data trade mission that took 10 mins last night for 250k. Was high risk as well..... Never saw anybody (which was the point) just seemed to easy considering some of the horro stories. Also saw a assaination mission for 1.5 million. Will do one today to see how difficult they are. Loving the messages from fed about rep.... Adds realism.

Ref the missions, I got the impression that they're far more tied to your status with specific factions.
I've been focusing on trying to take missions from my "home" system and am now regularly being offer 1 million credit missions for "normal" goods (ie. not illegal goods), so can make fairly money without impacting upon my status. Right now, I'm Tycoon level, which will again influence that.

If you're missions are substantially worse paying, then my guess is:
- You could be a lower trade rank
- If you're picking up missions whilst on the move, could just be that you don't have good relations with the faction in the system you're in

I did think that FD were trying to encourage us to move around more, but assuming the above is true, the practicalities are pretty much the opposite.

I think that may be true. I just picked up a boom data mission again for 300K. However.... I cant cash it in because of the mission bug

Also see this thread.... Strange noise... lets us know if you experiance it or have a clue what it is...

Went with the Clipper plan. Sat myself next to a Nav point with my Clipper. Took along 128 limpets, 3a limpet controller and the best Wake Shift scanner I could find.
As it was a patrolled system, there were plenty of good guys around, meaning that when I engaged a wanted ship, there was typically someone helping.
Gave up when I ran out of ammo for my multi-cannons, but by then had 110 tons of materials, 26 scans of "odd" wakes and a whole bunch of scans of other shifts identifying other engineer upgrades.

So, very successful, happily recommended.

Ok this all made no sense to me which means I have been out of the loop too long.

Can you please help bring me up to speed on whats been going on? Is this all to do with Engineers I take it?

yes, you need to get rep with engineer, then you need to collect items for the each upgrade attempt. Generally its a mix of scans, materials and commodities of varying degrees of rarity.

Also I have it a good authority the Smiling Dog Crew will be blockading Wyrd over the weekend. So heads up if you are heading that way.

Ok making more sense but obviously need to read up.
Any links about Engineers to bring me up to speed? I would be grateful!
Also I heard there are now new mission structures? How different are these now?

As already linked, checkout the Inara link, that will help.
In summary:
- There's a whole bunch of "engineers" being introduced. My understanding is circa 30
- Each engineer can "modify" one or more components on your ship (e.g. FSD)
- You'll see invites from 4 or more engineers in your communications tab
- Additionally, open your screen for status and in the bottom right corner is a box labeled "engineers". Go in there and it'll help you find their locations. Most are a good distance away (at least for me). Closest for me is 5 jumps in an Asp
- Each engineer has a requirement that needs to be met for your introduction, e.g. give them dosh, data, components, materials etc
- Once you've been introduced you then get the option of which component to update
- to update a component you need to have unlocked data. You do that by scanning either ships or ship wakes. My suggestion is just scan EVERYTHING, whenever you have the chance
- If you have the data for a component change, then you can see if you have the required materials. If you've previously been on planet, you might already have some. The Inara site gives you the breakdown of what's needed and good places to find.
- Once you have the requirements, you can try to make a build, at which point RNG kicks in and you "might" get something good. If you say no, you still lose the materials for that try out, but it doesn't stop you having another go.
- As you work more with that single engineer, your "rank" with them improves, unlocking better options. Just keep going seems to work

Hope that helps.

I grabbed enough scans and materials in roughly 4 hours to allow me to make rank 3 with one engineer. Just need to grab some more arsenic. I'm looking to update the range on my FSDs first. Apparently it's possible to get upto +45%, which I'd love to have.

Awesome just awesome. This is exactly what I needed. Thank you!
A bottle of beer and catch up on Elite this evening I think :)

What other types of benefits exist which engineers could enhance?

For those interested, there a suggestion that's been made to improve the detailed surface scanner to:-
  • Give a list of the materials available on the surface of a planet. So if you need arsenic, at least you can work out which planets give a chance of finding some!
  • Create a (procedurally generated) distribution map. Show this to the CMDR via a "thermal image" type graphic in the HUD and obviously when in the SRV, the dice are just skewed according to where you are on these distrubution maps.
  • Apply the same mechanic to planetary rings (for mining). ie: So the distribution map shows what material are highest/lowest in the different areas of the ring.
  • Add in "stateful hot spots", so an area (surface or ring) might have a particularly high concentration of an element. When this area is mined, the dice are skewed even more accordingly, and as that material is mined in that area, the hot spot's value is reduced. Once it's got to zero, the hot spot is gone!

Seems such a logical solution to solve a number of problems, while also introducing some nice new mechanics, I'm quite excitied by it!

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=258294&page=8&p=4007154&viewfull=1#post4007154 (Here's a summary of the mechanics in the associated thread on the ED forum)

Agreed on that, it'll get my thumbs up.

For arsenic, I went for a wander in my SRV on a random moon in my home system and found some in the 2nd rock I found. I guess it's just luck of the draw.

For other benefits have a look through the Inara link, just too many to list as there's not only the more obvious change to stats, but some components have "special" abilities (again, just luck of the draw on RNG).
When I did a quick play on multi-cannon upgrades, there were some additional extras that could potentially be useful.

My suggestion is that you look through the Inara site and decide what's most important to you, based upon the engineers you already have access to.
For me, its jump range and speed. Jump range makes nearly everything in game easier, and speed allows me to avoid combat when I don't want to.

I wouldn't mind a bit of extra speed for my Annie, as she is a sluggish bird when making chase. What are the costs to these benefits like? I assume more speed needs more power for instance? Is it quite a jump or just a bit more?
