European Grand Prix 2016, Baku - Race 8/21

Don't fees the trolls.

He complains Monaco is an utterly pointless bore fest that shouldn't be on the calendar...every year...throughout the whole race...while watching every minute of it...and then comes back next year to do the same.

IMO they either need to relax the radio rules slightly or limit the number of changes or options available with the engines. I predict some heavy simulator time for Lewis over the next few weeks.

This was my point when they first introduced the rules. The sheer complexity of the cars ad controls that can only be changed by the driver is incompatible with a regulation that prevents them from being assisted in using that level of complexity.

They are also being asked to make decisions and changes based on information about the car that they don't have, and can't be told.

The original rules banned them even discussing tyre strategy. They would rock up in the pits and have to guess what the strategy was based on the tyres they were given.

:D Noted!

In fairness, I do think the same about Monaco, but... You've just got to watch the bad races, with the good.
As dire as I thought this race was, I'll definitely be tuning in next year (presuming it still exists).

This is a good point but it isn't the fault of the rules, it is the consequence of how the teams have fine-tuned their settings. They could easily have two settings for:

- qualify
- conserve fuel

and let drivers alternate between the two with their own judgement. The problem is that they have several different options for each part of the power unit and energy recovery, and a limited visual space in which to feed back the impact of each change to the drivers whilst they're in the middle of a race.

But of course they want every single option available in order to extract the maximum possible performance from every possible scenario. That approach can sometimes fall flat when then pilot doesn't understand what to do, and we probably saw an example of that today (no reflection on Hamilton over any other individual though - these power units are blindingly complex).

Yeah Hamilton should know a bit more about the settings, or they should limit the number of options.l

How is anyone comparing what Rosbergs problem with the settings to what Lew is had to do.

Rosberg made a change on one control...it was the wrong setting....flicked the same control back to the previous setting.

Something goes wrong with the power unit in Hamilitons car, and he not got any clue what engine setting he should change, then warned by his engineer about changing anything as it could make things worse.

Largely because Benson I believe broke the story as "both had the same problem, Nico fixed his by reverting to previous setting".

He made it sound like they had the same general issue and Nico fixed it quickly though a bit luckily. As you say something went wrong with Hamilton's engine apparently due to an incorrect setting on the car from before the race and implied it was a engineer/team mistake not Hamiltons and he had to guess from out of nowhere how to fix it.

Rosberg had no actual problem with the engine, Benson is just a truly horrible reporter, Rosberg just picked some low power setting and quickly went back to a higher one.

Benson also broke the story change on twitter as "hamilton getting 4 different tires and might be from another driver".... he in fact got one replaced with one of his own tires. Benson is a grade A ****.

From what's been said by Wolff, Rosberg has had this issue previously so knew how to correct it.

Hamilton never had the benefit of that experience so was a bit screwed.

Seems dodgy to me, both should know how to do this and not just wait for the issue to arise and then expect them to figure it out.

Yeah Hamilton should know a bit more about the settings, or they should limit the number of options.l

Hamilton was effectively told "we can't tell you what the problem is, but is caused by a setting on your wheel, but we can't tell you which one. Good luck!"

Even if he knew the exact function of everything on the wheel (which he may well do) that wouldn't have really helped.

We have no idea how many settings and options that would mean having to know. They already simplified the wheel for him because he was struggling having too many switches/dials/controls.

I'd prefer them to remove 90% of it or let them be told. Then again in the old days he just wouldn't be able to fix it and go slower or retire.
