Where are 9.5mm 2.5" 3TB hard drives?

These were supposed to be out somewhere in 2015. 2016 now and still no sight of 3TB capacity.

What happened? Did manufacturers just give up on 2.5" mechanical drives?

In general 2.5" drives are still required for cheaper laptops (with reasonable capacity) but maybe 3tb is just too high for the market (Im not sure why anyone would want to carry around that amount of data permanently)

With 1TB (commercial) SSD's already coming out for $500 maybe we have come to the tipping point of viability?

Certainly within a year it will probably be more viable for manufacturers to have two SSD controllers in a laptop for the same capacity you are talking about with less issues in the long run.

Surely for backups/NAS 3.5" drives are much better options? And for laptops needing > 2Tb is very niche imo. I think the market is now all about NAS's for bulk storage.
