I posted this on Facebook earlier as the amount of abuse being banded around this morning is getting ridiculous:

For everyone freaking out about the GBP:USD rate, seriously, chill. We knew this was going to happen, the market knew this was going to happen, it's standard behaviour when there is uncertainty. The rate isn't a reflection of global sentiment, it's the market looking to avoid risk and pulling capital to mitigate that risk before things settle again. Everyone needs to calm the **** down, take stock of what has happened and lay off throwing insults around. It's a democracy, things can go two ways. Suck it up, move on and work together toward a stronger future.

Because....this is the bit where you give a reason.

Gibraltar overwhelmingly rejected shared sovereignty with Spain in a referendum just over a decade ago. Since then Spain has been antagonistic to Gibraltar. Why would they suddenly want to join Spain with who they have so little in common?

There's unlikely to be a referendum anyway due to the strategic importance of Gibraltar.

I hate to say it but I'd choose Gove out of that lot. He's done a decent job as Justice Secretary.

It feels a little like choosing between flavours of Ebola. Some are worse than others, but that doesn't make any of it appealing.

So you want to live in a totalitarian/authoritarian state? Sounds like being back in the army, but with no camaraderie :(
I tell you what, I'd give a lot right now to have a dictator come in and say, "THAT VOTE DIDN'T COUNT" at the moment.

This song was originally aimed at the US, but I feel it fits here:

There's no point for democracy when ignorance is celebrated
Political scientists get the same one vote as some Arkansas inbred
Majority rule, don't work in mental institutions

NOFX - Idiots are Taking Over

I've been talking to people in Germany, and listening to a number of speeches and asking for the jist of a bunch of speeches I don't understand from people who speak the language and I have to say, I'm horrified. The UK is not going to be allowed to set the timetable on this.

The EU doesn't have a choice in the matter. We are still an EU member with a veto until we decide to exit.

Cameron was a very liberal conservative PM. Anyone else is likely to take the party back to the right.

He wasn't. You wouldn't even have seen Thatcher making the moves he was with the NHS and benefits

Ok, gay marriage. A socially 'liberal' action. The rest of it... not so much.

To everyone who voted LEAVE, thank you! You've also helped push David Cameron out, a horrible evil man who with help by his minions tried to kill many disabled people and the poor

Bye bye

If the economy fails because of this everyone will take a hit, I can't see any government reversing current policy that has been implemented towards those groups.

Gibraltar will go back to Spain before the negotiations are over. No way are they going to sit pretty where they are and not be part of the EU. If there was another vote in Gibraltar now to vote if they want to stay as part of the UK or go to Spain they'd hot foot it to spain in a heartbeat

Thats about as likely as the fingernail I bit off last night becoming sentient, waking up and making me a Coffee.

Demonstrating 0 knowledge of how Gibraltar views/viewed the referendum and its repercussions for us.

So you're thanking people for voting against one person instead of the actual referendum. Logic

I do have a nasty feeling this was an anti Cameron vote, especially as he didn't come out of renegotiating our terms in the EU very well.
From many comments here and elsewhere I think a lot of people have fixated on one issue only whether that be one individual or one aspect of the EU. I hate the phrase but I don't think we look at or can even see the bigger picture.
Let's see what happens next, higher petrol prices I suspect. Both sides will come up with why that will happen! Blame blame blame.
Andi.

Have the US markets even opened yet?

The risk was already factored in to the rubbish 1.4 rate we have had for ages.

Also, it likely isn't going to go much above 1.40 as it was at that level for a while (taking the risk of the EU exit into account). If we voted to remain the forecast was for it to nearly hit the 1.6 again.

There's a really good chance that the company my mom works for moves their London branch to the mainland and she loses her job.

But yea, maybe some positive thinking will help her?
