Brexit thread - what happens next

Very sad to hear this.

I was remain, and still would be for many reasons, but I honestly didn't expect things like this to happen in this country.

Ridiculous.

well it is happening, but according to brexiteers....... it's project fear.........

We have just regressed 30 years, no doubt they will start throwing banana's on the pitch when Sturidge touches the ball just like the good old john barnes days, but I guess most of these morons forgot that sort of stuff ever happened. The people that harboured those views are still here in this country you know, they didn't go away and they weren't miraculously changed into having a different view on race / racism, they were just put to the background , but now they are screaming to the front again.

It's been happening since to dawn of time my friend. Guess what, thousands of incidents of racism occur every day, this is no case of zero racism prior to Friday and now suddenly 10% of the country have turned into Nazis overnight.

The main difference is its getting media coverage creating the illusion of it being something new or somehow on an alarming rise.

And yet at least 4 posters in the last 10 minutes have mentioned themselves or their wives/girlfriends suffering abuse since Friday that they've never before experienced.

Is that the medias fault?

The agenda being pushed on here is that they do represent leave voters thats the problem.

Every country has racists and we would still have them regardless of the referendum.

Im sure there are thousands of objectionable people that voted Remain (terrorist sympathisers, paedos, assorted criminals) that 'enjoy' open boarders - are they representative of Remain voters?

Exactly. There's people who voted Remain who don't believe in borders and don't care if half the world comes here and destroys the country because they believe we deserve it due to what happened hundreds of years ago. They'll happily tell you that.

You are correct they haven't turned into racists overnight however they now feel vindicated in their opinions and safe to voice them

Yeah, lib dem voters in particular saw it as a betrayal. Shame really, I thought it was the best government we've had in a long time.

As a Lib Dem voter, I thought it was the right decision at the time as I wanted them to take the opportunity to enact some of their policies rather than just talk about them. Also, Labour gave them a bad deal and were arrogant in the negotiations which was a pity as this would have been a better fit. I just wish they had kept their promises on tuition fees as this issue really killed them and they should have been united in voting against the bedroom tax whereas many voted for it.

This all gave the impression that power corrupts and shattered the idea that they were a party of principle and would look out for ordinary people. Despite still doing some very good work this was all overshadowed by the bad decisions they made.

I still voted for them because I believe overall they are a good party, but I wish they had been more shrewd.

My biggest worry right now, is that as far as I could tell, prior to the 22nd of June we had a fully functioning country with a good economy and no real reason to do anything rash or silly, it was all just fine really. (it really was)

That's just it, we're fine now but for how long?

People need to stop thinking of leave being a short term solution. It's to fix the problems that will likely arise in the future from being part of the EU as it continues to get worse and the bureaucracy gets worse. When failing economies like Italy and Spain get worse and other countries need propping up, when an EU army becomes a thing...etc etc

The short term issues from this might be bad, but I genuinely believe long term this will be for the best.

Just thought I would check-in with my old pal the Daily Mail to see how he is doing today, I mean I can agree with this.

I wouldn't be so sure the Daily Mail was right in saying that Leave voters would have accepted the result if it had gone the other way.

Before the vote had even taken place Nigel Farage was saying there should be another vote if we had voted Remain and the difference between the two camps was small.

Behave. There's has been a massive increase in open racism. The closet racists feel validated now.

You really have not got a clue (Just like Boris) what you are talking about. Membership has increased in there thousands since last week. The real decline is what is staring you in the face i.e. Westminster politicians they have now shot themselves in both feet now once with the expenses scandal and now with EU ref.

The credibility of MP's at Westminster has now reached as low as you can go, I hope the rest of EU treat was is left of UK with contempt and make continuous calls for the next Tory leader apply Article 50 ASAP and at that point Scotland will be leaving the failed disjointed Union. At least us in Scotland have some chance to escape this madness with some proper leadership in Scotland will we witness the Tories fighting each other, Labour imploding and pound & shares failing, What was that they said in 2014 we are "Better Together" my a**e.

Like I said, when the dust settles down.

Scotland will have to look at what independence will now mean.
It will mean the euro, tight control by Brussels, austerity imposed by the ECB, TTIP on the cards again, potential border controls with England. Oil won't rise above $50-60 for many many years.

Anti-British sentiment is at an all time high now, but independence means a very different thing today than what it did in 2014.

Oh dear.

That is because no one has turned their attention to the SNP yet. For the last few years our leadership has been weak: The economic crash of 2008, coalition government, the Scottish referendum and then the EU referendum has all drained the governments strength and made it weak. I think that now we have a real opportunity to get a strong government who will take on and defeat Sturgeon et al.

Is Boris the man to do it? Possibly. Unlike Osborne, he does at least resonate with the working class. But Ruth Davidson may actually be the one to watch in Scotland. She's shown herself to be quite capable and may well put down the SNP.

Reality check. It is the people of Scotland that decide if Sturgeon and the SNP rule in Scotland not Boris or Osborne. Davidson has come up with very little going forward, her main battle cry in the election was vote for us to be a better Opposition. She was helped by the meltdown in the Scottish Labour Party and the continued LibDem demise.

Sturgeon is bluffing she wants to feel special, there is no way Scotland can survive on its own with the price of oil falling further as well as Scotland having the biggest debt of any current EU country.

Thats not what I said - but hysteria and tarring everybody with the same brush is unhelpful and divisive.

Oh the Irony, coming from you of all people! :D

Had some racial abuse hurled at me and the missus over the weekend too - first time in years I've experienced that sort of thing out on the street. Makes me worried for my children.

Seems this campaign has done nothing other than screw us all over and given the bigots and racists a legitimate platform to scream from.

I know 99% of these social media driven petitions are pointless but why so much emphasis on this one? It will amount to exactly nothing?

isn't this how Nazi Germany came to pass ? Open and blatant racism being accepted / having a blind eye turned to it because it's just a few "skinheads" who don't have a platform............ we just gave them a frigging platform and filled the sails full of wind.

This is going to get a lot worse before it gets back to normal. Closet racists are crawling out from all kinds of rocks as they now feel validated. It's already happening where I live and I am seeing it firsthand.

No one's turning a blind eye, it's illegal and wrong, report it to the Police.

More on that line we brought you from Angela Merkel's spokesman, via Reuters.

"One thing is clear: before Britain has sent this request there will be no informal preliminary talks about the modalities of leaving," Steffen Seibert told a news conference a short time ago.

"Only when Britain has made the request according to Article 50 will the European Council draw up guidelines in consensus for an exit agreement."

On the process of the UK's departure from the EU, he [George Osborne] said: "Only the UK can trigger Article 50. And in my judgement, we should only do that when there is a clear view about what new arrangements we are seeking with our European neighbours.
"In the meantime, during the negotiations that will follow, there will be no change to people's rights to travel and work and to the way our goods and services are traded or to the way our economy and financial system is regulated."

Stalemate?

Did you miss the images showing news reports of physical and verbal attacks on immigrants? This is not just 'heap booze fuelled kids hiding behind keyboards.' It's Leave campaigners on the rampage, putting the boot into 'them dirty foreigners.'

No it's not, its a few racist thugs, stop trying to blame it on Leave voters.

Indeed, surely if previously closeted racists are now making themselves public, we can actually deal with the ****s?

I refuse to believe that this referendum as turned previously tolerant people in to sudden massive aggressive racists.
Those committing these acts have always been, and probably always will be.
