Brexit thread - what happens next

The money we could make from selling to more countries outside the eu with our own trade agreements would more than cover these tarrifs, I assume.

We can have both outside the EU. So no tariff access to the EU through the EFTA and FTA with other countries. Same position as Norway, Switzerland etc.

News just in:

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby
English will remain as the official language of the European Union
rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the Brexit negotiations, the British Government conceded that
English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-
year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will
make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in
favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have
one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when
the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words
like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted
to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.
Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have
always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag
is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th"
with "z" and "w" with "v".

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining
"ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl. Zer
vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu
understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze
forst plas.

:D

LOL.

I'd rather have EU tariffs than the completely open boarders we have now tbh.

Some companies keep saying they will move out of the UK, but where exactly are they going to go? The Euro is on a down (pound is now on an up again, as is the FTSE) and their future is even more uncertain than ours. Plus if they move to Europe they might loose access to the UK, so in the end they would be no better off.

The UK has already had trade offers from some non-EU countries, Canada offered to start talks on day 1.

Besides who says tariffs have to work both ways? We could allow EU goods in and not impose a tariff. Which would keep the German car industry and French farmers happy.

it is financial services that will take a kicking potentially... if we end up with a deal for single market access minus financial services as a compromise for our immigration control demands then it would be pretty popular among the general public who hate bankers anyway... but a bit of a hit for the City of London

I laughed the first time I saw this about five years ago.

Maybe the country needs to adapt a bit. Shift towards the technology industries. Makes sense given the fact land prices will fall and non-EU business can become more straight forward for components manufacturing.

We've come to rely on service industries far too much in recent years.

My Dad has just admitted (while watching the news) that he feels stupid for voting leave... I couldn't believe my ears.

If you knew my Dad you'd know he's not one for admitting to things at all let alone something like this!

You're just trying to call everybody who voted leave stupid in a roundabout way. Nice try.

Who may then decide Paris or Frankfurt is not such a bad idea. That would really shaft the country.
