Suspect garage not actually done anything for MOT/Service

So I had my car serviced and mot'd last year and pretty much within months suspected they hadn't done a thing. There were no advisories or issues reported and it went through perfectly fine only needed a £3 light bulb.

Now I knew there was at least 1 thing that needed sorting and that was a nail in the near side back tyre which was repairable. That wasn't noticed or mentioned at all. A full oil change was also done apparently even though 2 months later my low oil pressure light came on when I checked it was pretty much bone dry. I know my car uses about 1 litre of oil per 3,000 miles, certainly not 4.5 litres.

Anyway just had car back in for its MOT/Service and low and behold the list in extensive with over £1000's worth of work needed, CV joints, welding, things that should have been noticed last year.

Question is, can I do anything about it now even though a year has almost gone by. I'm sure if it had been reported a year ago the extent of the work required now wouldn't be any where near as bad.

Have you confirmed the list they've given for £1000s of work is actually stuff that needs to be done? Or is it all conveniently stuff you can't check very easily yourself? (I don't trust any garage)

There is no way you could prove any of this IMO, its been a whole year of wear and tear on a used car and thousands of miles....

Nothing you can do now but definitely get a 2nd opinion on all the work that apparently now needs doing.

CV joint i know about as the car did make clanging noises from the off side front wheel when going over bumps and the corrosion was noticed several years ago and mentioned as an advisory so I knew it was there just didn't expect it be £600's worth.

All in all

Welding
front o/s CV joint
2 new front tyres
1 back tyre repair
polish headlights
service
mot

£1095.30, looks like I won't be upgrading my PC for some time :(

FYI bottom to top on your dipstick is most likely a litre of oil.

In future always check the oil color following a service.

It's been too long for you to really do anything, if it needs 'thousands' spent now then it may have needed that back then, either way you'd be spending that money, you just can't prove anything from back then.

Yep name and shame. If you want a good honest garage in Torbay then drop me a PM, I know someone who runs one and is really genuine and he doesnt charge much

To be fair, you shouldn't need a garage to tell you you need 2 new front tyres and if that rear tyre repair is the same one you knew about a year ago then why didn't you spend £20 and get it fixed then?

All of that could have developed/worsened to a fail stage within 12 months tbh especially if you'd already had an advisory for the corrosion at a past MOT.

600 quids worth of welding! is there anything left of the car? lol :p

Seems a tad expensive for everything tbh.

What car is it? how many miles since last MOT/Service?

Same garage as last year?

What's your car?

I always check the oil and tyre pressures very soon after a service. On a petrol car it will be clean looking if it's been changed. Diesels soot up faster.

If you knew there was a nail in the tyre, why didn't you tell them to either fix it or replace the tyre?

Didnt mention it because the nail was perfectly fine and the tyre remained at the correct pressure for months even after thousands of miles.

Have I read this right, you were driving round for a year with a nail in your rear tyre?
