Summer Transfer Window 2016/17 - Rumours & Signings

The Pogba saga reminds me of the Di Maria transfer all over. A very good player but with the price just getting out of control. A couple of months back the talk was £50-60m - which was expensive but you could just about justify it with the way prices have gone but £100m is just mental. When did he become one of the very best players in the world?

edit: Both Di Maria and Pogba wanted to join other clubs too.

In a way it does, but Pogba has repeatedly said he likes Manchester and the club, the issue was with Fergie and nobody else.

£100m~ seems crazy but when you look at modern transfer fees, from every possible angle - assuming he fulfils his potential - it's somewhat justifiable assuming the club can afford it, and they can.

Will he be any good? I certainly hope so.

If its true and Varela is to be sold i'm guessing he's probably asked for the move. He's 23 now so it's at the point where he really needs to be playing regularly if his career is going to go anywhere, it's unlikely that will happen at United outside of injuries.

Jones, Mcnair and Young are unlikely to go as they help fill the homegrown quota.

Fellaini and Januzjai can F R O for all I care

We could probably do the 8 required home grown without them

Rooney, Rashford, Carrick, Lingard, Shaw, Smalling - and that's just british players in the senior squad without incl kids and foreigners who actually comply with this rule.

We could certainly get away with selling two of the three I mentioned :)

Thought Varela played well last season, I'd rather sell Valencia and keep him as backup to Darmian.

I like Varela too to be fair, but there have been whispers for a while Mourinho doesn't rate him (or enough to keep him anyway) so it doesn't come as a surpise

Mind you there were whispers a few weeks ago that Darmian was on his way out too, and that's since gone quiet so who knows.

Please acknowledge that in my first post I said ...."add possibly one decent defender (either FB or CB) and the squad would still be better off than last season imo"

So PLEASE stop going on about needing a CB which Ive already agreed with - Blind and Fosu Mensa can imo cover the FB positions where required (we need to give the kids proper games otherwise they leave - look at Fletcher this summer for instance, and so he should) . Would much prefer seeing F-M at right back (if Darmian is out injured) than either Valencia or (I look at a football and get injured) Jones.

Even if we have endless amounts of money, its impossible to integrate that many new players over a summer (or proven time and time again to be difficult at the very least) - Mourinho isn't going to go on a massive spending spree.

Edit - and also remember that IF JM gets a CB, it then gives us an option of playing Bailly at FB which I believe he is pretty decent at also.

After what we have already got, I think its highly unlikely he will buy any more than another 3 players - for the 1st team squad, I'm not talking about academy players here - and most likely its only going to be 1 or 2 including the Pogba position.

Yep agree. Not that much against Ashley Young but would prefer to see Pereira fighting it out for a place in the squad. I think Jose mentioned that he prefers specialists rather than utility players.

Actually very true he did

Can you have a specialist squad player (from a purchasing right now point of view), would be hard to do without it happening organically over a few years

(as we were discussing squad places really)

edit - I even forgot Bothwick-Jackson in the home-grown/British list also :)

I really hope we give Pereira a shot, can't help but feel he'll leave if he doesn't get a chance this season.

I think Januzaj, Rashford, Depay will be lower down the pecking order, but all deserve a shot to show what they're capable of. Rashford already has of course so really hoping he gets more games.

Depay struggled to adapt but could be a crucial player

Januzaj didn't see much of him but looks like he needs to improve his physicality or be left prone to injuries like Young.

I was only taking the **** with the last sentence.

As for the fee, regardless of the way fees have gone, £100m is ott. Like I said, it's a bit like Di Maria, every day it's getting more expensive. At £50m odd then fair enough but for £100m you'd want one of the top 3-4 players in the world and Pogba's barely one of the top 3-4 midfielders in the world let alone players.
