BMW and M Power Owners

Ultimately depends on the colour temperature of the Xenon bulbs being compared against though really^

£1700!!

My insurance went up after being rear ended last year. Even though I was told it would be unaffected, it's the usual excuses of inflation, lots of claims throughout the country driving premiums up etc etc. Insurers are generally scum in this regard.

I may be biased, but I wouldn't say insurers are scum for putting the cost up when you're involved in a non-fault claim. Insurers must demonstrate to the FCA that pricing decisions are made on hard evidence - therefore the cost rises because they can demonstrate that people involved with non-fault claims are more likely to make fault claims in future.

Inflation in liability-class insurance is a very real issue too - the prevalence of ambulance chasing now, as well as the cost of legal action means average claim costs are rising at ~5-10% per year in many liability areas. Stumbling into the equation of course is the Chancellor deciding to raise IPT from 6% to 9.5%, and now a further rise to 10%. I find this particularly galling with motor insurance, being compulsory, but that's something else entirely.

My premium is £760 for the year with that in mind. When I phoned Sky insurance last renewal, they simply couldn't beat Elephant. Perhaps I'll give them another go next renewal, as I'll have owned the car a full renewal cycle then, maybe they'll offer something better.

Also worth trying Chris Knott (have lots of agreements with different owners clubs) if Sky can't match. I'd be happy to pay a little more for the better cover though to be honest.

Yeah the extra cover is a nice thing. I've got legal, courtesy car and other bits as well. Voluntary excess is £250

As I said before, I've been pleased with Elephant's customer service in the past. But it would be nice to see the premium be south of £500 one day...

I'll give Chris Knott a chance come next renewal thanks :)

Insurance companies have statistical evidence from decades of claims for many 10s of thousands of accidents. That data shows that people who have a non-fault claim are far more likely to have another one than those with a clean accident history.

I understand that. There's every chance I might get rear ended again in a year. But then again I may never have another non fault accident for the rest of my life. I just don't agree with the increase is all for something that wasn't my fault.

Just get old, my insurance quotes just came back between £250 and £300, I went with admiral @ £300 with £150 excess...

Mind you if they found out I had angel eyes and pressed number plates I'd probably get the extra 50% chav loading ;)

Fox - what's the main differences between the LCI F10/11 and non LCI. Also, do you know if there was much a difference between the 245 and 258bhp engines...apart from 13 bhp :p

The main differences between pre and post LCI on the F10 are somewhat minor – even more so for the M Sport.

Essentially, the LCI changed..

Front/rear bumpers on non M Sport models along with introduction of Modern (Which nobody ever bought) and Luxury trim levels.

M Sport front bumper had new LED foglights in a slightly different position

Business Navigation now standard.

Xenon headlights now standard – however what they did was make the base headlight offering with halogen indicators – Xenon. The upgraded headlight offering, which was previously Xenon’s with LED indicators, became LED headlights. The consequence of this is that 99.9% of cars now have no headlight upgrades and halogen indicators. LED headlights are exceptionally rare. Pre LCI most high spec cars have the Visiblity Package which adds Xenons, LED indicators, Adaptive and High Beam Assist. HBA and Adaptive on the LCI are optioned separately but HBA does include proper ‘beam bending’ style high beam.

Tweaked rear tail lights

Side repeaters moved to wing mirrors. Old hole for side repeaters blanked with plastic fake chrome because it’s still required if the car had Park Assist so they couldn’t get rid of it.

New steering wheel from F30 in the M Sport models. Pros: It looks more modern. Cons: It’s from the F30 so it’s made of cheap plastic and isn’t as sturdy as the old one

Minor under the skin tweaks. For example slight changes for sound reduction reasons, slight changes to the way start-stop works to make it a bit more seamless, launch control now standard on cars with Sport Auto Transmission (but codable on older cars). Few tweaks to the seats. Bit of chrome around the edge of the nav screen. Professional stereo renamed to Harmon Kardon stereo.

That’s basically it. The fundamental changes in the F10 came before the LCI – from September 11 production cars gained the better 530d engine with 258bhp and the 535d moved to 313bhp. Start/stop was also standard across the range. From September 12 production cars fitted with Pro Nav gained the new NBT iDrive system.

If you are buying an M Sport an LCI is nice to have rather than an absolute must have.

There isn’t much difference between the 245bhp and 258bhp engines. The 258’s are lower tax by virtue of lower CO2 emissions. They are both still N57’s.

A colleague of mine reversed into my stationary car in 2011 and I've been paying for it since, and only recently been able to wipe it from my insurance quotes altogether.

Statistics be statistics and I can understand why they charge a premium for it. Can't really argue with the facts. At aged 17, 18 and 19 I didn't have any accidents but that didn't stop the insurance companies absolutely rinsing my wallet - I didn't really complain though as I knew most 17, 18 and 19 year old lads were going about trying to write-off their Saxo's.

^ This is annoying but true. My girlfriend has recently had a non-fault claim and it's pushed up her renewal, although not by a meaningful amount - it's still cheaper than last year's.

...She also had a non-fault claim in 2012.

So I guess the insurance companies are quite good with their statistics and spreadsheets :).

It's mint but come on, a classic? E46 has a pretty terrible image right now must be as low as it can get. They are by and large just cheap end-of-life cars owned by barry boys at this point. Why would you want to pay 20k+ to join that club?

That is a crazy price

And it's sad but the above is definitely true, the amount of 318i's you see around here with huge exhausts and M3 stick on bodykits. The most tragic one has all the M3 styling (or poor copies of) with an M3 badge on the back but the stock single exhaust at the back :D

E92 M3 won't hold or go up in price. That's E46 M3 CS money. That will hold and/or go up in value.
