German police state that the attacker had German-Iranian dual nationality, and had been in the country longer than two years so, once again, nothing to do with Merkel's decision for Germany to step up and take a reasonable share of the refugee burden.
Yes and no. What I think we're seeing here is the hitherto unremarked effect of mass immigration on second and third generation immigrants already settled in the country.
I am making a big assumption but the fact that he had dual nationality and referred to himself as German suggests me that his parents (probably grandparents) left Iran after the revolution, and are largely integrated into their adopted home. Now thanks to mass immigration that balance is upset; they've got a foreign name. That's something the bullies at school can seize on anyway, only now the effect is much more pronounced.
Has his sense of alienation and isolation ironically driven him to adopt a violent creed? Or was he just lashing out blindly? We'll find out in due course.
