Ordered my new car ;)

Next time if you want nothing but

"Nice car mate"
"Congratulations"
"cool"

Please put at the end of your post in large font "NO CRITICISM ALLOWED"

It's a new rule I'll be implementing across the board for OP's, but it also comes with a caveat, you are not allowed to post in future anything relating to the decision you didn't want criticised, so if you do find out you could have saved more money, you could have gotten a much better spec or car, or even if you have trouble selling in future because everyone else has gotten a better version of the car and your resales value is lower, then that's on you because you didn't want any advice at the time.

I agree with you! i should have put no Criticism allowed but i have learned for next time.

Yes, in my experience the average 'new car sales exec' has very limited knowledge of their product, and are more concerned with trying to sell things like Supagard than showing you what options are worth having, beyond the packages.

I'll never forget a couple of years ago I went with a friend to the dealer while he was looking at a couple of cars, and while test driving a 520d SE, the 'BMW genius' said it was a "lovely 3 litre V6 diesel engine". I had to correct him.

I was at my local BMW dealer last Saturday, and he was convinced that the 125i had a straight 6 engine. After that you do sort of lose confidence in everything else they say...

People really need to learn that 99% of car salesman are salesman, they are not car people, the same things they use to sell a car they will sell a dishwasher or a timeshare. I do not understand why people are surprised by their lack of knowledge Vs car enthusiasts.

I just hope he negotiated hard because there are big discounts on these cars. The car he has ordered is available new, at that spec, for under £24k despite it's list price of much more than that.

Are these advertised "Offers" or is this simply the assumed level of discount available going off current trends?

Genuine question, could be persuaded back to BMW if they are currently offering decent discounts!

They are the prices offered by brokers - which is basically 'the assumed level of discount that you can get'.

The better the model the bigger the discounts - 340i comes in at under £30k

Considering that we were looking at the 2016 model and that the salesman might just about have been out of nappies when the E87 was first launched, it is more probable he was simply just wrong.

Probably he was wrong, but it's hardly the mistake of the century is it?

Most buyers wont be bothered with the number of cylinders so it's hardly going to be top of their agenda to learn.

Definitely not something to get upset about!

Holy mother of...

Might have to get some quotes.

With a 340i (or even 330i) what are the "needed" options besides pro media package?

As a bare minimum that's all you need as LED headlights are now standard.

Mjt will be along soon to tell you that night vision, adaptive suspension, rear heated seats and folding mirrors are absolutely essential :p

Folding mirrors are nice to have though.

Almost the entire options list is 'nice to have' - there isn't anything on the list that wouldn't be 'nice to have'. The trick is to work out what is absolutely essential to get your baseline price/spec and then anything else you can justify/find depending on whether you are buying new/used is a bonus.

I like my folding mirrors but I'd never put them on the essential list.
