I am currently transferring data from one HDD to another. (Around 700Gb)

According to windows, the data stream rate varies wildly, but seems to be averaging around 30Mb/S

This doesn't really seem very impressive, is this normal? Or do I have a problem?

If you have lots of small files they can slow it down to that level.

If you are transferring large files that is slow, but a badly fragmented HDD could also slow it down.

I am transferring a huge number of small files (100,000's) and a large Steam directory

I guess that might account for it.

My betting would be your small files are causing too much thrashing and the drive's not able to get upto speed.

You also don't mention how the two drives are connected? I would assume SATA via the PCI lane, but in case you are using via an usb external enclosure, that too would contribute to low speeds.

The drive I was copying to was in an x-dock on a CM-Storm Trooper. So it is SATA via the PCI lane.

As long as my circumstances explain the slow transfer that is fine.

I was just a bit puzzled at the time.

Thank you for all your help and advice.
