Overwatch

I played my first 'ranking' match in competitive.

Before it started, someone on our team went AFK to sort his dog out. Came back 2 rounds later. Seemed really surprised by the negative reception he got.
.

I thought this sounded odd, but I've just had a terrible run of games (down to level 47 from 53) and one of them that put me in a bad mood was on Temple of Anubis.

It was essentially 6vs5 as somebody on our team had selected D.VA, but never materialized in the spawn room (for both rounds) and they can't have been AFK because they weren't' kicked for the whole game.

Utterly bizarre. I reported it but wasn't sure if it's a bug or griefer.

47 ouch :D

The game is frustrating because even if you go on a losing streak and de-rank there's no guarantee you'll start winning even if you completely out skill everyone 1v1 and play well in terms of team play. That's because even if your opponents become worse as you de-rank so do your teammates!

Some of the things I've seen people do in this game literally defies belief. I watched a Reaper repeatedly die doing nothing about half a map away from team mates. Watched a roadhog constantly miss hooks then charge into a group... A zenyatta never use orb of harmony... And this is at games with team rankings of 63-69 :D.

I've thought about finding some more guys to play with and forming a decent 6 but dunno if I cba. Maybe next season. I'd say me and the 2 guys I play with are 70-75 skill level players but all it takes is one person to be awful and you're right up against it.

Really enjoying this at the moment, looking to branch out a bit from my usual safe pick of Soldier 76. McCree can be very satisfying when picking off headshots at medium range so think I'll sink some more time in to him.

Finally got around to finishing my 10 placement matches and got placed at 65. Not sure if that's any good but I guess over 50 is better than average?

Its not normally that bad... Might be because you are a bit behind in level compared the the majority of the playerbase now?

Yep I think that's pretty much it. I started being matched with 30s and 40s and that was ok and then from 11pm-1am it was just level 80s +. Gotta learn the hard way sometimes

What does everybody think of the balance post those big patches? Do you think it's fine the way it is now?

I play quite a bit and only have a few tiny gripes that are probably just rage induced rather then genuine complaints. But I know I play very little compared to some of the people here who are doing competitive constantly.

Had a weird night last night... was solo queuing because none of my normal friends were on to play, and got put into a game on Ilios, no groups on either side just randoms. To my surprise when I said "Hello! Anybody else got a mic?" 3 other people replied for once!! Not only that but they were reasonable, not salty, and we were communicating great; making call-outs, discussing strategies, people were willing to switch and go with the team's decisions...

Well, except for one of the other (non voice) players on the team. "Deadbeef" was his name. He had picked Torbjorn, and we initially queried it (not nastily, more of a "I'm not too sure about Torb for this map, but go for it if you think you've got a good plan") No response... Unfortunately he wasn't doing very good either - not only did the other team not have any heroes that the turret was effective against, he just seemed to be putting it in silly places and not really shooting himself or dropping armor...

We won the first round still though... but the 2nd we lost narrowly (both teams 99%) and the third wasn't going very well. We tried to ask him again to switch, as it seemed with one more proper DPS hero we'd probably be able to turn things around. Still no response. We get to the third game (match point for them), the rest of us still playing our hardest and trying to stay positive, until halfway through the match that same player switches to Mei and starts ice-walling us into spawn...

Pretty infuriating! By chance when I re-queued I ended up in another game with the other 3 guys which went much better; have since added each other in case we can play again sometime - the game really transforms when you get players who are willing to communicate properly etc.

TL;DR Got trolled by some jerk, but met some players with good attitudes

Last time I queried an odd character choice for map (Bastion attack on Dorado) we totally rekt the defending team and pushed the payload to the end in record time. Bastion killed it just by sitting on the payload.

So I tend to let people get on with it unless people chose 2 snipers or something and no healer.

65 is great. Infact that earns you a golden weapon outright at the end of this season. I got placed at 68 after my 10 matches on PS4. Recently made the jump to PC and got placed at 48  - Rusty KB & M skills!

Speaking of which, if anyone fancies a game my BNET tag is Cyrus#2976. Happy to communicate and keep team composition in mind. Placed at 48 but have since climbed to 52

Bastion + Reinhardt + Torbs on the payload attacking on Dorado is usually an easy win, especially if there's a healer paying attention and the other players are taking care to shut down flankers :)

Symettra is pretty pants in general compared to the other supports. No idea really what they should do with her.

Winston either needs a mobility improvement or shield needs a lower cool down in my mind. He seems to be noticeably the weakest tank the moment. You can argue his ult is dominating on some maps but if you're against a relatively organised them they can counter it so easily.

Everyone else seems pretty good to me. But I don't play all the heroes so I may be wrong!

I play her quite a lot. Good turret placement, and a quick Teleport ult can make all the difference.

Her weapon is pretty powerful at close range as well if you can follow behind people without them noticing straight away.

I use her quite a bit to defend Kings Row and usually do pretty well.

She's awful on a lot of maps though.

Yeah I completely agree - which is why we initially approached it with a sort of "Not sure about this, but if you think you can pull it off by all means go for it" type of tone... In my experience sometimes that results in the player saying "I'll switch if it isn't working" or "I could pick X instead if you think it'd be better?" or "What do you guys suggest?" and it's just friendlier and more considerate in general than going "Torb, WTF? well gg guys mister noob over here picking torb fml"

We only became more insistent as it became clear Torb was not working well at all

Totally agree with your point about Winston. I used to love him at low level play but now, he's very rarely a viable choice unless you need a really aggressive push and even then, I'll usually just role Zarya. I think a shorter cool down on his shield would be almost perfect.

Can't really speak for Symettra. Only played her a few times and really didn't enjoy it.

What rank are you playing her if you don't mind me asking?

I haven't seen a decent one since I broke through the 60 barrier on the PC personally. Of course every hero can be great in certain situations.

A good Genji? A decent Zaryha or Winston tank. Otherwise people that understand not to shoot while he deflects helps :p
