Am I being unreasonable?

I've been going through similar stuff thinking about a new car. On the brink of getting a Renault megane rs265 as my mondeo doesn't give me any joy.

Instead though I've talked myself out of it in favour of landscaping our garden and maybe renewing driveway. Then when house is looking good I'll get the car I desire.

Just gotta think of your priorities man. For the tiny mileage you do it's a disgusting amount of money.

There are loads of fun/special cars out there that don't cost £20k - or even £5k - get looking.

I wanted an estate car as we've taken to camping recently and the wife didn't want us using her (new to her) Mondeo Titanium X (can't blame her for one minute) - something more practical than my Scorpio Cosworth (or the Westfield) but I don't want to sell either of them and I didn't want something hum drum. Ended up with a Honda Accord 2.4i Type S Estate for £2k - very happy with it.

Unteeonable that's an understatement

You can't think of it as your money anymore. You have a kid and she's presumably gone part time to help look after the kid. Its joint money and 20k is an insane amount of money.
Better of putting money away for university

But as others have said seems like you made your mind and only wanted confirmation. Kind of back fired there.

RWD with some power?

I don't think you will.

Something like the Golf R is more achievable though. But then not massively different to a Type R.

In what way is a golf R not massively different to the older gen Type r's?

Risking your relationship to scratch an itch is never going to work out well!

Also "Car Guy" and 20k to spend on a 1 series for that sort of mileage!? if your a real car guy :p a 1 series would not be a consideration imo

In a marriage everything costs double, if you want to spend 20k on a car then what can she have that costs similar? Happy wife, happy life and all!

Why would he save for child's university?

University is funded by the government through loans and grants.

Partly funded that way and getting more expensive every year. Its a sensable thing to do if you habedisposable income. As you know most reasonable parents want their children to have better opotunties than they had.

I'm sure it has been said time and time again in other threads.

It is silly not to take the government up on their offer of grants and tuition/maintenance loans.

As you might have noticed, the government is actually only getting something like 60% of that money back.

Dedicating your entire life to support your child even in adulthood has it's limits.

Did I say anything about not taking them up?

Its hardly hard with so much disposable income to Chuck 100 a month away to help your kid establish themself when an adult. Be it help you through university, house deposits etc.
If you haventnoticed there's a pattern, of increased price and more debt over the last few decades for all these things. With increasing amount of people living at home with parents well into there 30s. And there's no sign of that changing pattern over the next 20 years.

I approve of this post!
More I think about it could you have two cars in your household? A family barge (boring, 5 doors etc etc) and a little toy like an mx5 or old BMW. Heck you could even get a s2k which will be a lot of fun.
Yes the tax might be higher but at any time you could sell it and break even.

I don't fully understand how long she'll have left. At the moment she's doing a masters but I think to become a psychotherapist she needs a doctorate so perhaps another 4+ years.

Well realistically doctorate or masters or not the jobs simply aren't there for her at the end. She's picked one of the most oversubscribed careers possible. Most of the people I've met (and I've met an awful lot) who have masters and higher in psychotherapy are working as care assistants on 16k a year.

Just something to bear in mind.

If you are going to chuck £100 a month away, you might as well put it into the mortgage and pay that off quicker.

Makes next to no sense putting it in a savings account in a low interest rate environment.

The increase seen recently is entirely due to slow wage growth in the age group brought about by a major event in 2008. It has already started decreasing.

http://visual.ons.gov.uk/living-with-parents/

It also wasn't that massive of an increase. 20% in 2008 to 25% in 2015. 5% of young adults.

The vast majority still live away from their parents.

Less anecdotal experience but same.
And she will be competing with young fresh grads.

If I was doing any education now.. It would certainly be with a prospect of certain employment.
Personally I think that career (especially to PhD) is crazy
