OCUK RWYB Drag Meet - Saturday September 17th - Santa Pod Raceway

If my 21yr old made of chocolate gearbox moving what can only be described as a 4wd whale can handle a few hard launches I'm sure a lovingly German engineered machine will just walk it :p

And my 18 year old gearbox and diff having twice the torque it was designed for shoved up its backside

I meant more along the lines of are they available at the venue for rental etc?

A quick search through their website suggests they don't

I paid around £100 for my Sparco helmet from Demon Tweeks

The R8 requires no real skill. Launch control, time, repeat. If it were manual then yes but with modern boxes and no real clutch control it's a bit crap.

Are helmets required in a soft top even with the roof up? I aren't going to be hitting 110, but if it's necessary I'll bring one along.

A quick google suggests a stock GTR does the quarter in about 11.5s @ 120mph so you would need a helmet

This is pretty spot on!

My friend had one of the first UK GTR's, all he did to it was the Y-pipe modification, he never dyno'd it so I cannot confirm the power but we went drag racing at an RAF base. They had all correct timing gear, though the run-way was dusty.

He did 3 passes, his best was 11.4's and his worse was 11.6s, his terminal speeds were all around 118mph.

I also did 3 passes in my Saleen Mustang at the time which was running 575BHP as reported by a dyno. My best time was 12.1's and my other times were 12.4's and 12.8's, my terminal speeds were 122-124mph.

Yes I simply could not launch the car, but I have never being good at launching manual cars that I actually own myself as my launch method is just a little revs, at the time in the Mustang I was launching around 2500rpm and feeding power in through first, then my 1st-2nd changing was a nice gentle clutch in, change, clutch out and feed back into the power.

I am sure I could have launched at more RPM and snatched 1st-2nd much faster but to me it plainly just feels wrong and like your going to break something, I know this is unlikely because when I have a hire manual car every set of lights is pretty much a drop the clutch and power shift 1st-2nd and never had an issue but hire cars you own for a week or two at the most, haha.

But yes the GTR is very quick and insanely easy to do, he found just using the simple approach of flooring the throttle was giving easy 11.6 runs with zero drama, he did do an LC launch which was the 11.4 run but he did say that in the GTR he felt something might break if he did a few to many of those, though it felt fine to me.

I am useless at quarter mile in a manual car if I own it myself. An auto or hire car no issue however. :D

I shall still try to make this meet, will most likely bring the BMW if I do as I am rather interested in what terminal speeds it can produce as I know I shall be useless off the line as it has zero grip for off the line launching being so lightweight, but once into 2nd all is fine. A bone stock M3 will take full power in 1st no issue and just launch, whereas mine spins the wheels throughout the whole of first no matter how much you try to feather the throttle in.

I fail to see how its a bit crap, the modern PDK, S-tronic mean you can do a perfect launch pretty much every time, get a stonking fast time and even better repeat it with ease and with little transmission strain.

When my mate did this in the GTR he found just a basic launch was far easier on the car and within 0.2s of using a full bore LC launch, so you should come, do a few regular gentle launches on the car and then towards end of day give it one LC launch. I mean coming the latest R8 must be a high 10s car stock pretty much. :)

I'm pretty certain that's EXACTLY what he means by it being "a bit crap". There is no longer any skill involved, you just plant your foot and the car does the work. Sure, it'll get the "best time" your car can achieve, but it gives no real sense of achievement for getting a good launch.

True but when it comes to launching a car the ability to just get the best time with little to no risk of damage is also appealing. :)

But yes sometimes there is a lot of fun involved in just laying down a big smelly set of 11's and spinning the wheels up through the gears, i.e. hooligan style. :D

Gibbo, you have a Mustang. I expect you to be there using line lock. Simples :D

I've done it once, never again, it mullered the tyres and the car stank for ages man. :p

But at this rate I won't have the Mustang back by then, this is a joke by the way, or at least I hope I am joking.

Stick me down for this. I will bring along my 2014 F56 Mini Cooper S 2.0 turbo. My dad and nephew will come along for the day. Then off to Silverstone on the Sunday for BTCC.

This.

It's clever, consistent and fast, but if anyone can do it then it's not worth the effort in my book. When I did Fighting Torque in 2007 it was all down to me. No traction control, no DSG, no launch control. It was left and right feet matched to left hand, but even then though it was fun to hand everyone their arse I raced against and every standard TVR there (plus all standard 996 turbos and 997 GT3) it still wasn't like a track day as the steering wheel, you know, the thing that makes it real fun got nothing but a tight grip :D
