No Man's Sky - Procedural space game

Wow :( a sad day in pc gaming imo. There is something base about this game which to me is the total antithesis to everything i find great about pc gaming. ie Rich stories, choice, handcrafted quests, rich world environments and lore. oh yeah....whats the word.. Depth

Instead we have something that appeals to part of ourselves which enjoys collecting, upgrading, seemingly endlessly. Thats the main gameplay element of this "game". :/

Diablo series is a bit like this too. I think Hello games tapped into this part of the human psyche. No rhyme or reason...no plot to speak of except the one where they want the customer to use their imagination to provide it. They remove integral things that are in most games (ie plot and story) like communication with npcs and turn it into a collecting puzzle element. You might think it is more than it seems but i think that is just part of their gameplan. A very very shallow game imo. But this is what they think gamers are....i think this game is a watershed which sets pc gaming backwards not forwards :(

The world doesn't revolve around you. Other people in the world have different tastes and like this game, clearly a lot actually going on the feedback.

I actually want a change from the 'rich stories' you mention in games like the witcher. This offers something different - freedom and no hand holding. Thank goodness there are a few people out there willing to make something different.

And in terms of 'setting gaming backwards', the procedural generation in this game is leaps and bounds ahead of anything we have ever seen of this nature tbh.

I know its not popular to be critical of a game in its own thread (as has happened to other people on here when they give an opinion less than glowing of the game in question, they get the backs up of ppl who like the game). But you will just have to get used to the idea of freedom of speech yeah ok? Dont take it personally when someone doesnt agree with you.

Anyway enjoy :)

Mack posted his part 2 review of NMS. I'm off to play some Fallout New Vegas

Oh please. Sharing an opinion/having a discussion is quite different than your last post. Anyway, each to their own...perhaps put your effort and enthusiasm in to something more positive..that you enjoy.

Mack has zero credibility as far as I'm concerned! He is applauded for his forthright approach, and yet is known to give the thumbs-up for shameless cash grabs like Far Cry Primal, or underwhelming independent titles like Bit Shifter, but give scolding reviews of Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3.
I've unsubscribed from his channel because I respectfully disagree with the majority of his so called impartial reviews.

Still on my first planet...finally scanned the birds for the 100% completion and the 170k credits. Just walked around looking and exploring, and mining emeril (the green stuff). Have now made 1.7 million credits and just enjoyed the walk. Fell in some caves while looking for the birds, had to come up with solutions to get out!

I still haven't found a new multi-tool, plenty of tech but in the strange way that upgrades work, I don't have a spare slot to put any upgrades into (rather than upgrade the item in the slot). I plan on circling the base where my ship is located, and then take off!

I've liked just walking around and making my own story, no pressure to do anything, no one trying to shoot me in the back and steal my stuff!

Cheers,

seems like its just cool to try and troll threads these days.

I don't particularly like TW3, should probably go and tell everybody in that thread repeatedly how bad it is because I saw a review on youtube.

15 hours in, storyline is going nicely (not having to mine n grind mine n grind etc, inventory management FTW). Beta patch has it running flawlessly for me.

Having watched the WAB I think its the first one of his that I actually disagree with.

Comparing this to elite when you're a reviewer that loves elite is pointless. Like comparing sim city to settlers IMO.

44 hours in :D

Not completed the Atlas quest thing yet, too busy just exploring.

11m credits in the bank and looking to buy a 3rd ( larger ) ship to keep up with the lucrative mining i do.

Can't see me getting bored yet, as each planet is different in more than just visuals.

Different weather conditions, heat, radiation, toxicity all make for great variation.

Combined with the soundtrack, it's all very atmospheric.

Parked up for the night..........

Nice screenshot Brizzles, ship looks quite nice too.

One thing I like is seeing the other planets in the sky (like in the backdrop to your screenshot) and knowing you can go there any time you want, and likely to have a different experience.

It would be like being able to enter every building in The Division and make your own story, rather than those that the developer has decided you should go in (just choosing the Division for illustration, no inherent criticism of the game...most "open world" games have the same limitations).

Cheers,

Have to disagree with you there. NMS is basically trying to be elite. It is. I mean NMS has copied elite by making a procedural universe, yep elite does this. Same as trading, and elite does this. Combat, yep elite does this. Exploration, yep elite does this. Landing on planets, yep old elite does this, new one will eventually. The only thing NMS has at the mo that is different is landing on planets is a bit better because elite doesnt want to procedural generate them like NMS because it will be boring and samey which david b said all along and he was right. Its best to do it along side hand crafting planets not soley relying on procedural gen of them. Also the whole random animals thing is not worth a mention tbh as its just crap, as most ppl just ignore that they are there when on planets in NMS.

At the end of the day, NMS isnt new at all. Its just a updated version of the old elite games from 25 ish years ago with new gfx. The go to center of the universe mini story is tiny bit different from elite which isnt really that great is it as its so vague. And NMS has animals. Thats the only difference if you really look at the basics of it.

Elite and No Man's Sky, while on the surface are quite similar, play very differently. You can say 'just' plants, and animals, and atmospheres, and weather.....but given No Man's Sky's gameplay revolves around exploring planets, it's a pretty major difference! Exploration in elite is the most mind-numbingly dull grind I have ever experienced in a video game. I really hope they do finish the game with atmospheric landings some time but I'm not holding my breath. And ugh the travel times in ED sometimes are soul-crushing, I just have better things to do with my time than sit in a sim watching numbers count down.

Still playing NMS, still not playing ED here :)

If anyone is bothered I found a vid that tell you how to setup a flight stick/hotas on this. You need to download a xbox controller emulator & map the joystick functions to it. Ridiculous that this is even needed tbh.
