What have you done to your car today?

Put 2.4bar in the tyres. They're meant to be 2.2bar, and were on 2.1bar.

They are still really squidgy :p

And malt, if it is the HG, have a go at replacing it yourself. If you muck it up you haven't lost anything.

Ref my post above.. I just flushed the coolant, pulled the thermostat and left it out. Refilled from the rad top hose and it has not overheated for a good 45 mins. Drove it out and around twice in that time and where it had overheated before in minutes it was fine and actually dropped temp a couple of times and never went over 90 on the guage!
Going to try a run to the tip tomorrow and see if it survives the trip :D

That's what I've spent to get 250bhp out a 950 quid car

I hate to think how much I spent on £500 Rovers, tuning them to 250bhp with an LSD, big brakes, polybushes, braces...

Do I regret it? Not one bit, they were massive fun!

Not sure I'd say the same for a diesel Skoda Octavia though ;-)

I wouldn't either, but sometimes you have to do these things. Nothing more rewarding that driving some that drives the way it does because you built it that way

So the picking up of my dads new car didn't exactly go to plan

40 miles into a 90 mile return journey and we suspect that the fuel pump failed :p.

Yeah but you're talking about a many mile old 1.9tdi Octavia that will always be a many mile 1.9 TDI Octavia and will therefore handle like its got an anchor at the front and drive like it's got an old diesel engine with a stupid turbo/map

Moot point as its not actually being considered, but to encourage anyone to do so in a car like that is (imo) barking. It's a world away from a turbo mx-5 or another small turbo charged hot hatch or the likes

Jist because you can do something doesnt mean you should

The 1.9TDI's (even the old 90HP ones) do actually tune really really well and can be quite fun, they are a very strong engine, and 169,000 miles isn't even that many for it really. Remember that these cars used to be pretty much every-other taxi a while ago, loads of them have done well over 300,000 miles. Some even 400,000. :)

There's a Golf on Youtube on 500,000KMS with the ALH engine like mine, running around 200HP. :p
(launching in 2nd, 0 - 60 in under 7 seconds!)

But even so, I'm not going to do it because its not what I bought this car for. If I wanted to do the TDI tuning thing I would have started with a PD130/150. Probably a Polo GT or an Ibiza Cupra TDI.

Changed the fuel pump in the Mrs' E46 316Ti Compact. Failed to start last week, diagnosed (by technical whacking) that the fuel pump was failing to start, £68 later and about an hour's worth of labor and it's replaced.

I really REALLY hate the crimp-on style jubilee clips.

I'm such an idiot sometimes. I knew the front brake pads and discs were low on my E46 so I ordered the parts but waited for the light to come on (I knew it would be at some point in the very near future), got around to swapping them over today with some new discs and Textar ceramic pads. Took the car for a 20 mile drive on the motorway to get the bedding in process started, brake wear warning light comes back on.

Got back home and it turns out the rear pads are low. The facepalm was real.

Now just ordered some new discs and a set of ATE Ceramic's - I couldn't find the Textar's for the back.

Another fun day working on the brakes next week :p

Got the ECU back with a base tune going but there is something a bit wrong. Took it for a 10 minute drive and it ran like a pig, doesn't want to cruise, doesn't want to rev past 5k. WTF huh?

A little rich perhaps. Don't know if the tune is off or the MAF I got is bad. Not good.

Exactly, it would be a daft base to start from and is just chucking money down the drain on an old smelly diesel motor that will never ever be "fun"

You could spend an absolute fortune making an Octavia handle better, even a petrol model with a decent engine but it would still be completely outclassed by a type R or even the likes of an e46 sport.

There are just always "better"cars around when you get to this kind of age. Octavia's are and will always be a compromise type of car. For you it's a tool to run cheaply, get to work etc. For me it's a reasonably powerful, cheapish car that I can easily chuck the dog and all baby gubbins in but don't quite want to end it all when I have to drive it to work all week.

Did you get non-res?

Nope, resonated. I had a silencer delete and it was too droney for my motorway miles. Nice sound now but not overly noisy. Did put a smile on my face when trashing it earlier! What I like about the system is that if I want it non resonated, I just have to take the resonated pipe out and fit a non res pipe.

Also managed to fit the Powerflex lower engine mount. I didn't notice much difference really, just more vibrations :p

Gave it a good clean, always revealing when you get a new car, fortunately didn't find anything untoward and it looks brilliant now. Had a chance to check the oil level and it's sat just under the full mark, despite 8k miles since servicing so it's not gone up at all. Average mpg sitting just over 50 so DPF is happy as Larry. Forgot how nice it is to drive a car that handles well, they seem to be a great balance of steering feel and handling without being hard and uncomfortable. Really chuffed with this one :)
