hey guys,

due to (i think) My FX8350 bottlenecking my 1070, I'm looking to move over to intel for my gaming.

can someone please advise me on the best CPU for around £120, this includes used ones that can be bought on the bay too. preferably new, and from OCUK.

its a sole gaming machine, apart from spotify and some web browsing.

thanks in advance guys!

If i remember correctly from all the intel vs amd comparison videos back in the day i think they give a fairly even performance in games the make use of the 8 threads on the AMD chip but even then the intels gave a smoother experience as they had better minimums on the FPS. Whereas in games that didnt take advantage of multi threading the Intel chips blow the AMD ones out of the water.

So more than often a lot better but at worst comparable.

I wouldn't touch an i3 for gaming as certain games won't run well without a quad core (FC4 being one), I'd try and wait for Zen, after all it's not like you can't run the games so they are playable. Whatever you do don't cheap out on the cpu after spending what you have on a 1070. As you've seen a rig is only as good as it's weakest link.

i5 3570k? Would that be a significant upgrade for gaming from the 8350?

No, Your not going to beat an 8350 with just 120 quid, You need to save up some more money and look at waiting on a 6 core Zen or an i7 to ensure a noticable upgrade, For now overclock the 8350.

Again, it's not worth it. A 3570k is not any faster than an 8350. As mentioned either overclock the 8350 and save up more money or buy something that is an upgrade not a sidegrade.

Well that's not really true at all.

A clocked i5 3570K versus a clocked FX8350 with a 1070 will result in the 3570K system generally being better for gaming, an i5 3570K core still wipes the floor with an FX83's
Not that I'd suggest going for an i5 3570K *now* from an FX8350, don't see the point, it's 2016 not 2012.

OP should either stump up the money into a Skylake set up if wanting to buy new, or remain on an FX8350 until Zen (But if Skylake money is making him balk, Zen's an unknown quantity)

Or, go secondhand for an i7K set up.

If you can get a i5 3570K with a Z77 motherboard for £120 and overclock the crap out of it it's probably worth the upgrade. If not then I would stick with the FX 8 core chip.

Not from what I've seen, When I owned my 3570k I actually regretted not going with an 8350 instead, For gaming some games will favour one and some will favour the other so neither will win it hands down, I'd say they're very evenly matched with the 3570k slightly ahead if all you want to do is game and nothing else but I found it to be a bit of a slug when wanting to do a few things at the same time and certainly not an upgrade worth doing over an 8350.

It's a mid range chip, I don't know why people expect so much from the i5's (Although, with changes in this sector, I do believe that a 4c/8t chip needs to become the i5, and the i3 needs to become the 4c/4t).

For gaming it's undeniably the better chip, but the FX83 can offer higher potential performance when they're both going 100%, or when you're using more and more threads.

I wouldn't go to an i5 3570K from an FX8350 in 2016, but I'd have definitely bought an i5 3570K before I ever ever considered an FX8350.

hey guys,

thanks for all the responses. would a good option be upgrading to the i3 6100 with some ddr4 ram and a decent mobo, then upgrading the CPU to a 6500-6600 when i have saved some money so that it doesn't break the bank as i will have already upgraded the mobo and ram to what spec i want?

Best to save up and do it all in one, using an i3 isn't really going to benefit you.
