Germans to be told to stockpile.

Ause cards dont work if the powers out.

On the subject of power didnt fermany forcibly shut down all its nuclear plants after fukishima

Only to be powered by French reactors anyway, even regardless of the fact that Germany is a practically landlocked (oops) nation with no serious weather anomalies...

Idiots.

Are they decommissioning/demolishing them all or ate they just being mothballed or something

I know that the eight they shut down following Fukishima were permanently closed with no intent to re-open which I take to mean decommissioned. I don't know for certain that the remaining plants they're closing are being decommissioned rather than mothballed but it's the impression I got.

Honestly, there is a strain of madness in German society when it comes to nuclear. You know how smart people will sometimes get fixed on a conclusion and contrive all sorts of byzantine justifications or select whatever set of statistics proves their point? My experience of arguing nuclear power with Germans has been like that. Akin to wrestling an octopus. I genuinely consider the anti-nuclear hysteria in Germany both bizarre and disastrous. I firmly believe it's going to have a serious negative impact on Germany's future. I also think the next time someone tries to rebut it by saying "Germany is a net exporter of power" and doesn't understand the difference between "power" and "electricity" I'm going to scream. :(

Remember reading a few years ago there was concern a large piece of one of the Atlantic islands could fall into the sea and generate a tsunami. However that would be unlikely to reach the German coast in the north, more of a threat to southern Europe or the west of France/south west UK.

We probably have enough tins, biscuits, crisps etc. in our pantry to last a few days with rationing and there's several bags of cat biscuits that could be eaten as a last resort (yuck). Water not an immediate concern with a huge header tank of clean water in the loft for the hot water tank.

The biggest concern in the event of an apocalyptic event is other people knowing you are well stocked and coming in to try and get it. The PC keyboard is surprisingly ineffective used as a weapon, for real.

Anyhow I knew my recurring dreams about running from/fighting off some sort of world changing event must be coming from somewhere.

And who would have guessed all along, Fallout 3/4 and all the zombie programmes on TV are actually there to prepare us for what's coming.

Also Putins words.

...

Nothing is going on, all is fine.

I think that's been cut quite heavily, iirc he went on to say that was has brought the greatest security since WW2 is the two major powers (USA & Russia) but with NATO expansion and the missile shield and everything the USA are undermining it and backing Russia into a corner.

Its not really illogical to say to people to plan for eventualities.

FMCG has pretty much taken JIT to the limit now. Honestly lots of products are going from raw state to being on supermarket shelves within 24 hours. This means there is very little in the system as a buffer.

Canned foods are the best. Technically they never go out of date, they have an in effect guaranteed ok date on the tin but nothing happens to the contents inside as they are sealed in a germ/decay free environment. Thats assuming the can is undamaged.
Also they are already cooked, may not be so appetising cold but technically fine to eat.
Also vitamins etc are fine so in effect its easy to get a balanced diet from tinned cans.

Water is far easier to get hold of, even if there was a power outage, so no pumps. Small generators etc can load tankers and water bunds etc
Probably worth having those little purification tables if worst came to worst, any stream etc could then be used, simple filtration and water tables will means its safe to drink, but could be pretty nasty tasting.

Depends a bit - the convenient/easy filtering/purification methods aren't effective against stuff like heavy metals and some viruses, etc.

It would have to be pretty dire to not be able to obtain drinkable water by one method or other in this country though.

Saw it on BBC News website - now top of the read list.

The latest interior ministry strategy paper is looking at compulsory conscription.

(The claim being they can't rule out large scale internal attacks - rather than a counter measure to rising external tensions).
