Brexit thread - what happens next

What exactly is the problem with a consolidated army though?

I personally would prefer a combined force than to see Corbyn in charge of it.

Well, who decides when and how to use it for a start? That's a pretty big issue I would say. I know a lot of remainers are putting great stock in this notion that sovereignty is something of a joke to be laughed at, but it really isn't. King Louis XIV had the words "The Last Argument of Kings" inscribed onto his cannons, if you don't have any cannons then you don't have any last argument. Would an EU Army, with the UK in it, have been prepared to go and defend the Falklands for example? or intervene in former British colony Sierra Leone? Would we be able to continue in the Anglo "five-eyes" intelligence sharing agreement, which is incredibly useful in the fight against terror?

I don't want to see Corbyn in charge either, but if that's what we as a nation vote for then it must be accepted. I think there'll be consequences of having a wet lettuce in charge of our armed forces and if it happens we'll learn what those consequences are the hard way. At least we'd be able to recover from a bad PM, I'm not so sure it'd be that simple with another few decades of ever closer union.

Wasn't someone on here working for another company, saying nobody was buying new houses ?

Maybe your company is making dodgy houses lol. These people seem to be doing ok.

To be fair he (Greebo) said that no-one was starting any new builds in his area in the month following Brexit - I think he works for a council rather than a builders. I don't think he's the sort of person to make stuff up. I don't know enough about the housing market to draw any conclusions from that though.

Well Project Fear told of financial apocalypse so its no wonder small companies were scared - but as we are seeing day by day it was all nonsense and confidence is coming back. If anything Project Fear has done more damage than the referendum result.

But I think thats the point.
Humans by their very nature are cautions/scared of change, and uncertainty is just as bad or often worse than the change itself.

I agree you could see a state where if you needed all of europe to agree to action then one objector could scupper the plans. But its just as likely that what would happen would be more symbolic than hard as far as one army went, otherwise i cant see any of the serious military forces in europe want it, particularly the French. (they like a good scrap more than the brits)
Fundamentally however it makes sense to combine and look for efficiencies.

I would be more interested in say the nukes than conventional forces. Would brussels want the keys to the UKs nukes for example.

I wasn't insinuating he was making it up, just interesting to see another company in the same sector having very different results.

Although he may have seen an increase in movement at this point, would need to hear from him again and see if things have changed.

The nature of building is that typically they dont work far ahead.
And most of the workforce tend to be subbies so can be just not offered new work.

Housebuilders will always build when there is demand and stop when there isnt.
The benefit greatly when demand outstrips supply, and will naturally look to ensure this state. Of all the businesses I have worked in and with they seem to be the ones with the best long term vs short term balance (for their shareholdes). Probably because the one thing they rely on is land, and its still the most limited resource we have

Did I miss the emergency budget we were threatened with?

Brexit will certainly necessitate a new budget relatively soon, although when is anyone's guess. All of the extra civil service departments required as well as potential new regulatory authorities aren't going to be cheap.

Remain promised an emergency budget straight after the result - it was a promise they had the power to keep but didn't.

As for Brexit costs £5b is not going to require tax increases etc lol

To be fair, plenty of promises were made from both sides and few have been kept.

Nobody knows what the costs will spiral to. You have no idea if tax rises will be required or not.

Yeah I heard the Persimmon report this morning. Very strange especially since the one we deal with is bigger and they basically stopped. The good news there is two weeks ago they started building again (digging new foundations on new plots) so it was only a 7 week halt. It will still hurt their figures massively so will be interested to see their results when published.

Perhaps Persimmon appeal to a different buyer than the company I was talking about? They have definitely been affected totally differently.
