Apolgies for the bad camera, but got geekman's MR2 down at the workshop right now.
As some may know, engine developed knocking whilst out on track a while back. It's been sitting dormant since but it's time to bring it back to life!
Gotta say I really like how this MR2 looks
Plan is to swap out the current engine with a new one and take apart the old one to see what caused the knock.
First order of business was to get her up in the air and take the undercovers off
Followed by dropping all the fluids in the car.
Coolant & Gear oil were perfect, engine oil had very minimal metal in it but smelt a bit like petrol, so potentially a fueling issue or really old oil.
Exhaust came off next (I know these photos are amazing)
Before stripping the top side of engine bay, checked the ECU for stored error codes. None to report and all warning lights were in working order.
Lastly did a compression check to see how bad things were. Obviously done on a stone cold engine that hadn't been started in ages so I expected that the reading would be a bit lower then usual.
Cyl 1: 110 psi
Cyl 2: 50 psi
Cyl 3: 100 psi
Cyl 4: 110 psi
Didn't have a leak down kit to investigate further, but given the knocking sound on startup and the huge drop in compression in Cyl 2, it's safe to say that there is a good chance something on the bottom end gave up. Initial guess is a spun bearing
Spark plugs show signs of being fouled as well, perhaps oil in the cylinder or running rich
With the basic diagnosis over, time to start getting the car ready for engine to be dropped out.
Most of the electronics have been loosened or disconnected, followed by intake pipes, hoses ,intercooler etc.
Only have a few more hoses and fuel lines to disconnect until the top of the engine is ready to be dropped.
Next up rear suspension and engine mounts coming out!
