Clocking cars!!

You can check online, you just need the registration and make: https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/

People who were clocking old cars probably thought no one would find out about it. But now you can simply go there and check. If someone sells a car and does not tell you it's been clocked it's fraud.

Or alternatively; https://totalcarcheck.co.uk/

Gives a view of if cars are taxed or not as well as when stuff runs out :)

Edit: No affiliation to me, I just use the free aspect of it for mot history and making sure my other half isn't driving around without an MOT etc :p

Just discovered that my grandparents Nissan was clocked somewhere between 2008 and 2009, from over 60,000 miles down to under 20,000 miles. (Just before they bought it, probably by the dealer they bought it from)

Not sure if I should tell them or not, it was 7 years ago after all! And the car has been reliable and has never missed a beat. They will be happier not knowing. :p

Unless the car was written off/scrapped and for whatever reason someone put the plate on retention and has put it onto another car...though the chances of it being the same model, colour, engine etc are obviously pretty remote.

It's also unlikely for what's probably a bog standard meaningless plate, but it may mean something to someone and as I mentioned earlier in the thread, the MOT checker doesn't deal too well with one plate being moved between cars :)

Its an 05 Nissan Almera Tino 1.8 Automatic, so definitely nothing special!

Plate also nothing special, just a regular 2 letters 2 numbers 3 letters plate. The first two letters are BJ, so I doubt its desirable either. :p

Just checked and my first car is still up and running. Is there any way to check where it had its test done?

I'd love to buy it back for the nostalgia :D

My first car goes from 28,776 miles on the 4/8/07 all the way down to 2,895 miles on the 30/9/2008! It's back up to 23k in June 2015 :D

So what is stopping people doing this to lease vehicles to avoid excessive milage charges?

As we mentioned above this also reduces servicing costs, a car which has done 5k/year needs a lot less servicing than a car which has done 20....

would be a nice earner for us,

taxi fleet with new vehicles covering up to 100k a year,

run for three years clock back to 90-100k so everyone just accepts any wear as being high mileage

huge difference between a 100k 3 yr old car and a 300k 3yr old car in terms of cost

particularly rife among chauffeur stuff merc E classes etc

Unless you get an MOT tester with fat fingers:-

Put in one of my cars - Y489BBC - Ford - look at the 2013 entires.

Do dealers not check for this sort of thing - especially on low mileage PCP deals or is there no way of checking?

I imagine they could quite easily check the service history...

I don't believe this happens that often with dealership cars but more common on the private market. Especially when clocking the mileage can make tens of thousands of pounds difference in sale price (on an exotic).
