RX480 vs GTX1060

stating facts or flaws about team red or team green is not favouritism...its facts.

if you don't like opinions don't enter a thread where someone is asking for opinions.

Woah hold on there mate. That guy a few pages back got rather upset when I showed the difference in power usage, we can't be having such objective arguments around here!

In the YouTube chat people are reporting stuttering for both 1060 and 480 lol but neither me or my brother could see this.

What's this tell us? We all see things differently just like some notice stutter with Sli/crossfire while others don't me included in that one.

I firmly believe that what people is seeing is a lot of screen tear and that is making the footage look stuttery.

I'm seeing stutter everywhere, I've been rewatching the DS9 series on Netflix and certain scenes are a stuttery mess, I was watching my dinner warm in the microwave yesterday and I swear it had a little stutter every third cycle, I think I'm going stutter crazy!!!
I couldn't see it in the video though?

your basing on reasons to buy the 480 as expectations?...expectations are just that, they are not set in stone,i live for the here and now and what works best now not in 'maybe' a years time.

I said that the 480 supports FreeSync and that most decent monitors will have Freesync if they don't have GSync. And from that you turned it into the above? Freesync requires no licencing costs - it's very cheap to add yet offers high value in Image Quality. Of course we're going to see it become a standard.

ahh right the sweet spot just happens to be 4gb...weird that eh :)

From my explicit referencing of game benchmarks showing a hard limit being hit below 4GB Doom that crippled performance and a supportable argument that 4GB will be the new baseline, you got "just happens". It's amazing how many things I say translate into complete rubbish through the medium of your brain. The only mainstream current card to dip below 4GB is the 1060 and even that has a far preferred 6GB version. 4GB is going to be the new baseline. As evidenced by some game benchmarks that's already started.

yes if you have a freesync it makes perfect sense to buy a 480,i don't think anyone disputes that.

And now you're strawmanning. I said not only does it make sense for such people, but that most people who expect to buy a new monitor should think themself likely to buy a Freesync one. Therefore a card that supports Freesync has an advantage over one that only supports Gsync. The only people who use Gsync are the ones who explicitly wish to pay a substantial premium for the feature. The people who use Freesync are not only those who want it, but also those who didn't care that much but found that decent monitors that don't have GSync are starting to come with Freesync pretty much by default. Very different point from what you decided to address.

yes I wouldn't buy the 3gb model and I don't know quite what they were thinking in making that card.

Good. So why were you trying to downplay my statement earlier that 4GB is the new minimum. I've supported that with benchmarks, state of the market and you even concede that you don't know what Nvidia were thinking of and you wouldn't buy one yourself. My point stands then - 4GB is the new baseline and going below it a bad idea. Hitting it however, is fine. So a 4GB 480 is a viable card and this gives a substantial cost advantage to the 480 over the 1060 which doesn't gain much from the extra 2GB. The issue is staying above 4GB - that matters far more than having 6GB vs. 4GB.

remember all those people 'expecting' to see 1400mhz on the 480 at release day and 980 performance..how did those 'expectations' work out?

What I recall of that is a few people posting wild speculations whilst the rest of us all pointed out they were being unrealistic. Several of us even accused those posters making wild speculations of doing so just so that they could describe the 480 as a failure afterwards. I remember a lot of such posts, in fact.

Pretty funny how the 480 is meant to be a hot card etc..

Heres my Nitro+ 4GB temps.

1366/1850 clocks..

Idle = 28c (14% fan speed)
Load = around 55c (up to 55% fan speed) in Arma 3 & DayZ (with very high settings)

All 3DMark benches and Heaven with the core @ 1400Mhz = 66c max

The problem why reviewers had high idle/load temps is cuz they were using the 0db crap and auto fan speeds, getting 50c+ idle temps and up to 80c load temps.

With my 14% fan speed i cant even hear the fans unless i put my ear to the case.. and that 28c is with the warmer temps were having, at around 55% fan speed it really isnt that loud either and its only gona run cooler when winter comes along.

Just use the new TriXX SW with a Custom fan profile and the card has great temps.

PS.. my 480 uses around 150w-160w according to GPU-Z if i remember.. which i really dont give a damn about anyway.

My 7950 @1166/1625 was idling at 30-38c through a 1 year cylce and load temps were topping just over 70c with the fans being pretty audible..

So im happy with my 480 until Vega hits the shelves.

Makes me laugh how that one guy talked about the 1060 being 40% quicker than a 480, "just look in the Heaven thread" he said. I only see one 1060 in there and thats his.. lol.

/rant over :p

Just to back your temps up, here my nitro @ stock with max fans on 58%, im ruuning a MATX case so my case is hotter.

You went over the marketing materials? good boy, well done. Did you happen to watch the AMD stream on the 1st of June where this came from? While you were reading the marketing materials, did you see how focused they were on VR?

And I stopped reading your crap after you wrote "you're an AMD white knight" What a bs comment to bring to a discussion. Maybe you better practice what you preach and discuss the subject rather than the person. Or to use your line. Right then and there I knew what would follow would be total drek
So you've got absolutely nothing to actually contribute to the discussion taking place? No technical arguments, no nothing?

Sounds about right.

And no, the $500 GPU comment was not made purely in reference to VR. I looked it up.

Nice, certainly goes against the reviewers results though before TriXX im not sure if fan control was working in programs like Afterburner.

Unless somebody here has used something other than TriXX who can enlighten us?

:)

What are load temps though, and how fast is fan %?

For a comparison, I have an EVGA GTX 1060 SC, and I put the fans 40% and in games my temps get to 60c, sometimes. Side-panel is off my case though.

Nobody is having a go at the 480 but pointing out that the vid showed stutters. You are so wrapped up with AMD Vs NVidia that you just see that with my posting. Show me how I defended NVidia in that court case thread. Not once did I make them right but again, you are seeing me not throwing my toys at NVidia as defence. Shameful!

Edit:

Not really worth following up with, as you admit to your bias.

To be fair i could see stutter in the 1060 vid too but it did seem more apparent in the 480 side at times. The 1060 did look slightly smoother IMO overall but you did seem to glance over the fact 1060 stutters too.

I was actually seeing stuttering too on both vids though the 480 seems to display it slightly more. It seems weird that it honestly seems nVidia users are noticing stuttering but AMD users are not. Genuinely interested in this. I'm running Gsync monitor and 980Ti and in wondering if the gsync monitor is making it appear there is stutter or making it appear more obvious. It appears most obvious at first as the camera is panning across in the video from about 15 seconds to 45 seconds in. I can see the tearing too slightly and wonder if that's what is causing this appearance of stutter.

The tearing appears more from 1:10 to 1:40 and seems to be more a tearing issue than stutter.
However when in the video actually playing where you can see some one controlling jenson i cannot see the stutter at all on either sides.

This is from my observation anyways. Both cards displayed stutter from what i saw.

I do some video editing and every single vid of mine shows what the 1060 shows in terms of stutter and I can't lose that but when I am recording and playing, there is none there at all. A good example for everyone who is curious to this is to record any game that you can slow pan the view and record, put it into editing software and then watch the final vid back and you will see what I mean. The odd thing is, certain games look better when encoded at 30 fps over 60 fps for some weird reason but then others look better at 60. The stutter on the 1060 (and there is stutter of course) is what I see with every recording but the 480 is a proper stutter that would certainly show up when gaming, unless DF did something weird of course with the recording methodology but I doubt that, as they are normally very very good.

Thing is when im seeing it is in the same places as the 480. Surely if what you said was true id see it in other places too in the video? Not in the same places as the 480? That's just too much of a coincidence no? would have been interesting to see latency times on this game but i think it has something to do with what shanks said and tearing.

Seriously people are making judgments with a **** port like Deus EX mankind divided?

RX 480 and GTX 1060 both are very good card. They should make their decision based on good pc ports not a low quality console port like Deus ex mankind divided.

Dunno then, as to me, the 480 is showing much much worse stutter but then again, I really see microstutter bad with SLI, hence why I am no longer running SLI but others don't see it. Maybe it is one of those times that you just don't see it. I haven't looked into it if there is noticeable stutter on either card and if nobody is reporting it, all good. The vid might be exagerating it as well.

Things like stutter can happen on one pc and not on another obviously and even though I can clearly see the 480 stuttering more than the 1060, the 480 wins this comparison to my eyes.

Factor in freesync, g-sync or even v-sync and everyone's a winner.

HardOcp seem to be big on picking up on stuttering and usually give Amd a good battering if it's present. They had this to say so i doubt when playing the game stuttering is noticeable. I would put it down to the video capture on this occasion.

The AMD Radeon RX 480 is 16% faster than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 at 1080p in this game. The GeForce GTX 1060 drops down below 30 FPS to 27 FPS while the Radeon RX 480 maintains above 30 FPS the entire run. This isn’t even with DX12 API yet, and the Radeon RX 480 is already beating the GTX 1060 in DX11 in this game. This is with the NVIDIA "Game Ready" drivers as well.

Even more exceptional is the fact that the PowerColor Red Devil Radeon RX 470 is also faster than the GeForce GTX 1060 by 6%. Yes, that is a factory overclocked Radeon RX 470 GPU based video card that is $199 beating the more expensive GeForce GTX 1060 6GB video card in this game at 1080p with the highest settings.

So far a very strong showing for AMD at 1080p with similarly priced video cards. The GeForce GTX 1060 isn’t performing as well as we would have thought.

Idle and load temps for comparison.. thought i'd match your 40% fan speed for load temps.

Load temps is running DayZ last night for over half hour before logging temps, i use Vsync in the few games i play and have noticed if i disable Vsync the temps can rise a bit but without Vsync i seem to get some stutters like i had on my 7950 but Vsync feels so smooth locked to 60fps :)

Idle.. (28c @ 14% Fan Speed = around 610rpm)

https://imgur.com/a/zs8BV

Load.. (58c @ 40% Fan Speed = around 1650rpm) < also overclocked here @ 1366/1800.

Didnt embed images as i cant find the option to do so anymore with imgur, maybe i have to make an account there now, but something has changed :(

Heres a pic of my Custom Fan Profile..

Note: DayZ Standalone isnt the CPU dependant game it used to be since the new renderer (Enfusion Engine) brought DX11 and uses the GPU a hell of a lot more now.
