What are people's thoughts on the burkini ban in France?

Honestly don't see why there's a great discussion, as come the next few hundred murders prior to Christmas, this whole thing will look justified in the eyes of Sarkozy, NF, AfP et al. (including Sarkozy, because clearly using the situation to win points as a leading party).

Europe is a trench with many live grenades about to go off, and we can't help but focus on throwing out the grenades ignoring the enemy that keeps throwing them in...*Cough* S.A. *Cough*.

Answer = ban religion.
To do that you need to initiate the right protocols, to do that you need secular government rule only, to do that you need the collective to vote in the secular government rulers then you can change the laws and initiate the ban. Not sure if one could ban the religious mindset though?

How about dress certain ways due to government?

Also a valid point. I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of the poster who seems to have a problem with the government telling people what to wear but not religions telling people what to wear.

Asim, humanity generally started wearing clothing for warmth.

Identity was often through other means such as body paint and jewelery.

This is what the French law says. We have no say over it. We can grumble, moan, but ultimately this has been passed. Until it is reversed, its the Law. If I went Saudi Arabia and wanted a trip to Mecca or Medina it is illegal for me to do so.

In Islamic countries they often have very strict codes (especially for women) and yet nobody bats an eye lid.

Women - and many of them - have been killed in Islamic countries for not wearing a Burqa. Talk about double standards.

Lols. Saudi Arabia is a crazy place but it isnt and doesnt speak for the entire Islamic world.

In some areas of America you can get killed for wearing blue or red on the wrong street, is that indicative of all of America or western society... no. That is for sure gona be seen as a weak argument but my point is that places like Saudi and Iran force this by law but it is important not mix the forced covering up in public with women that cover up due to beliefs.

...and we are talking about a burkini here... it doesnt even cover the face, how is this still an issue lol

The law in France is what it is and is backed by the majority. I may not agree with it but will defend it. At the same time I will highlight double standards. You say its just Saudi that's crazy, a lot of other countries have women killed for not wearing it and many more subject to abuse for failing to follow customs (and sometimes laws).

We attack our governments and laws for things as being backward.... A fine for wearing a banned item.... Vs death for being gay. Puts things into a bit more perspective really.

The highlighted part... I said this????????

Apologies if that's not what you implied with this:

Just how I read it...

Although I am sure we could find a case such as this from virtually every Islamic country (ie "you must wear the veil")

It's a tough one for me,

The main argument for it in my eyes is to start to break down the rampant sexism that is engrained within the religion. Trying to promote the change that the religion needs to see, the religion itself is designed to resist any and all changes. So you have an impass.

So it's being argued that restricting something in law is not ok, but if a society and a belief system can bully it's way into widespread acceptance its 'a'ok. But as long as it's not legally forcing people not to it's ok?

This is a good point.

"...but my point is that places like Saudi and Iran force..." so I'm not sure how I was implying it was just Saudi that was bad for this.

Yea we could, we 100% could find cases of this in most if not all countries that have people that practice Islamic religions, but its a very extremist way of looking at something as I'm also 100% sure we can find cases of Christians killing non Christians in every country that has people practicing Christian religions.
