*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

I'd love to get into this however steam seems to be preventing me from buying this at the moment! grrrr.

Once I do get the play this it'll be with an xbox controller for a while until I can invest in something better. anyone currently use an xbox controller and if so does it work ok?

I initially used an Xbox controller. The game is playable with that, but it's definitely easier and a lot more enjoyable with a decent flightstick.

So I've been playing it for a good 4 to 5 hours now and i will admit at first it was frustrating the hell out of me... However now I've definitely got the hang of the basics and I'm slowly working away collecting credits mainly from data exchange and small trade missions (Haven't got a huge capacity in the starter ship.) So what should i be doing next? I guess it depends on whether i want to go the trade/mining route or the combat route right?

Anyone got any tips for a noob? Oh and i wish i had been made aware of this before i got no mans sky... This is exactly what i was after. :)

Personally I found the easiest way to get started was to focus on missions.

I wanted to get into combat to try it. A ship like a Viper is the first one really worth making the effort for. Great little combat ship and can happily handle itself at say a local Nav point. Just avoid getting over-ambitious with what you fight.

For missions, get enough credits up for a Cobra, which is basically the "do it all" for a fairly new player. Decent in every area until you have enough credits for an Asp, which is simply awesome.

You know can also start considering doing some of the engineer missions. They're easier than they used to be, but still not straightforward.
One key learning point is the tactic of simply RUNNING AWAY. Don't be afraid to. Also another good reason for either the Cobra or Viper, both have really good speeds.

Cobra is the most flexible early game ship (I just had a lot of fun in mine just now), and is very capable against other small ships and even against the like of npc asps and vultures. Just steer clear of the big ships. Can fit up to 64 cargo and has a reasonable jump range.

For the extra combat ability, I don't think the viper is worthwhile.

You could get a hauler and do a bit of trading, but they are basically the white van of the space world so not the most fun to fly. The adder isn't a bad ship either, but really it's a short stepping stone up to the cobra.

In terms of what to do to get there? Missions to start with (you'll get better ones as you level up your relationship with various factions etc), and if you feel like a break from that, try going into a resource extraction point (found on the rings of planets) and see if you can nip away at the wanted ships that the police are about to kill anyway. If you get a couple hits on them you'll get the bounty when they die. Just don't get killed or you'll lose the bounties you collected. You'll get a replacement ship if you die so don't worry too much about it (unless you have upgrades as you'll need to cover the insurance to get those back. Same with any ship you buy).

Took the FDL out for a spin last night.

Can't believe how much tougher the npc ships are now! I almost got taken out by a single elite cobra! He seemed to have far more firepower than is possible in a cobra.

Any tips on what to do with the engineers thing?

Question regarding Engineers. If I get my FSD upgraded does that apply to any FSD fitted to that ship, or just to that FSD ?

For example, should I only start getting engineer upgrades to the modules I plan to keep forever - wait till I get the A grade power distributer.

I'd like to know this too....

Thanks for the tips guys. :)

So i decided to take the plunge and become the white van man of the stars! Lol! The standard ship just wasn't allowing me to carry enough and with the missions available i wasn't making enough to afford a much better ship. Enter the Hauler. Whacked a few mods on it to give the FSD a better range, better power plant and a better power coupler and have now been able to complete the better missions(At this level anyway) and have picked up a few decent bonuses where I've got the cargo there before a certain time. Although on my current mission i didn't realise i had to land on a planet as the location I'm going to seems to be there. Do i need an SRV to complete this one? As i don't have one... I spent a good half an hour flying round the surface trying to reach the waypoint but couldn't get it so I'm assuming that's the issue? I left the game trying to find a base that sells SRV's/the thing to put them in your ship.

Now sitting on around 300000 credits well on my way to a better ship like the ones listed above. I'll probably try and earn a bit more so i can afford to replace the new one if i bin it. :p :D

^^^ also can you remove engineer upgrades (ie keep em and apply to another ship?)

I'm thinking about getting an upgrade to the boost and overall speed of my viper. Not sure how to go about that but will muddle about....which is the way of Elite lol not a lot of stuff is in the manual telling you about how to do x and y ;)

If you need to deliver something to a planetary station, you don't need an srv. You can just land there. If you need to go find some materials from a crashed ship for instance, then yes you'll need one. It can be a bit confusing finding the stuff on the surface if you don't know what you're looking for, so worth watching some videos if you aren't sure.

I've removed an engineer mod and I don't believe it was there to add back on later, but I can double check that. I have a feeling it's a case of modifying a specific module and if you change it then that's that. We will get module storage soon though!

I'll have to watch some videos then as there was a dotted line saying 5.5k on the surface but even once i landed nothing changed and i couldn't contact it.. I'll go and have a look now. Cheers. :)

I now have a horrible feeling i never lowered my landing gear... What a doofus!!! :o :D Even so i never saw anything resembling a station on the surface?

Ok well I have dusted off my Thrustmaster XHotas (took me a while to find the bindings lol.

So I have not learnt (again) how to launch/dock/FSD and shoot a little.

Now what to do in my cobra, trading I guess to make som money.

I have not played this for well over a year. and I think I only have 500k of credits.

Anyone got any ideas to help me on my way.

TIA

Depends on what you enjoy doing. If it's combat, pick up a Kill Warrant Scanner, head to a Resource Extraction Site (High is best for good ships) and then scan and attack the enemy "WANTED" ships in that area. Wait until the NPC cops start attacking them though, that way you don't take loads of damage.

If you want to trade, then use something like www.etn.io to plan a route from where you are now, and see what money you can make that way. www.etn.io also allows you to import your ship from www.coriolis.io so you can create your ship on that, import it to etn.io and it'll use your ship config for the routes. Pretty nifty!

Considering you're in a Cobra, how about some "Rares" trading?

This morning I took my first trip outside "the bubble". Visited Obsidian Orbital to see what the Meta Alloy business was all about, and to get one for the Engineer stuff.

Then the news broke. :D
