Can a cisgendered actor play a trans character?

Ignorant!

I thing gender identity crises are actually a genetic malfunction, but I'm not sure that would go down too well with the 21st century.

While you may be right, malfunction is probably a better word than disability, be is mental or physically/genetically based.
Needs more research really, and the groups who could provide funding would prefer not to, as it certainly would not suit their own agendas.

Because I have not heard a term I'm ignorant? (Or was that a joke in which case ignore this :D)

This whole gender identity stuff is ridiculous in my opinion.

I didn't use the word 'disability'.

Yeah...It was a joke.

I'm not sure there is much basis for that belief, could just as easily be purely psychological.

That's a chicken vs egg argument. You could say that psychological characteristics are a genetic factor.

People who play identity politics seem to be perpetually butt hurt.

Plenty of straight people play gay people and vice versa, don't see why a regular person playing a trans person is an issue.

Exactly.

Alan Cumming as Eli Gold for example, can anyone imagine that role being better if some other straight actor played it? Yes I like The Good Wife.

There is no reason why a straight person can't play a trans person. But I am guessing there are many trans actors who are under represented in the film industry.

they're probably underrepresented at acting schools too though and they're a fairly small minority in society generally

If I place myself into a special category based on an arbitrary physical trait I have, will I then be awarded a film role because whatever I decide I am is under represented?

Yes I had to google cisgender, is it even a word ffs.

So basically a heterosexual playing an heterosexual role, just WTF!

We have

Bisexual
Heterosexual
Metrosexual
Transsexual
Cisgender
Lesbian
Gay

Am all of the above.... :D

Figure that one out. :p

The world has gone nuts that's for sure.

Oh I recognise this urban dictionary definition of the word:

Yes Craig, a straight person.

Errr no.

The oposite of trans is not straight lol.

Thats kinda like going " a straight actor has been cast to play a black character".

They're unrelated points.

The trans people i know dont have a problem with this but then they are genuine transgenders not tumblr trolls with 15 differnt "kins".

Something I was wondering, how many openly trans actors actually are there. And how many of those would suit the part, be the best option and be available/want to do it.

So many variables...
